Dear Charlie thanks for this video on landscaping. You are one of 5he bes5 landscaper i ever saw! Your gardens, 3specially the one with the pond, are breathtaking! I was wondering when you move maples that are in the ground, do you have any wisdom you could share? I would need to move a couple of maples I planted last year and was wondering if there is anything i should be careful about? Do you move also maples that have been planted for long time ? Do some of them end up dying or maples can withstand the shock of transplant? Thanks

I have had the luck of some skilled diggers to accomplish all of the tree movement. I used to dig the big trees but now I only dig the smaller trees and leave the big ones to experts. The main thing I find it important is to use a shape digging shovel, cut a ring around the tree with it and then dig away from the tree not touching the root ball. You can figure out how small you can make the root ball by slowly cutting the dirt away from the tree until you start cutting into big roots. You don't want to touch the tree itself until you have dug below the root ball and can start digging under the roots. Depending on the soil, you may want to put burlap on the side of the root ball and then use twine to secure the burlap to the root ball to keep the ball from breaking a part. Once you have a solid root ball you start digging under the tree on two sides and then slowly push the tree to one side to cut the bottom roots and then push it back the other direction to cut the other roots. To get the tree out of the hole without a tractor you do the same leaning process but each time you lean it you put dirt back in the hole which raises the tree. Piece of cake????

wow thanks so much for your detailed explanation!it definitely is NOT a piece of cake! ahah it would be great if sometimes you could make a video of the skilled diggers you use while they dig out an acer. I am sure seeing it would definitely unravel few things that are difficult to explain with words.@@amazingmaples

I do spray the weeds on a regular basis to keep the weeds away. I also used black mulch.
