The sequal nobody was waiting for, but that got made anyway, since I have been sitting on a lot of sparring footage for quite some time now. This is another entry in the series on how half-armour interacts with different types of weapons and different opponents. In this case, I took on board some of the comments on the previous Landsknecht versus Knight video, and put the armour over my HEMA gear to allow opponents to not hold back thrusts and cuts to unarmoured parts. I tried this setup at the Harnischfechten Symposium and that lead to some pretty cool bouts. And several months later, this is the result! :D

Absolutely fun to watch. In the end I still think that it is nessesary to du continues fighting to compare those armors. A valid hit on mail isn't the same like on a Gambeson of a Landsknecht. I hope we can fight one day for a nice video (continues fighting of course 😉) Ps. I also love that you point out the advantage of a longsword over a poleaxe.

Thank you! I agree that continuous fighting would be a really necessary next step here. I suspect that the protection parity between half armour and full armour would rapidly wear off then: getting it exactly right against full armour once is doable, but a number of times in a row, well, the odds get quite bad. And against half armour, you'd only need to get it sorta right a bunch of times and those odds are better. I'd still love to do a video together by the way! Summer has decent odds for me. I might be able to even have my driving license by then, so that would make things easier. Let's get back in touch about it around that time! :D

Is there a reason the first guy in full armor was only half swording? There seemed to be situations where if he used it with both hands on the grip it would’ve went better for him.

There would have been some opportunities, but then you need to be able to easily switch between regular longsword and halfsword, and that takes some practice. And my previous experiments do seem to indicate that you do really need halfsword to find the weaknesses in half armour. That said, I did record some half armour longsword sparring with some guys at the club, and if I remember correctly, we all managed to land like one solid leg hit per bout. That may be interesting as a follow up video. ;)

2:33 Continuous Battle Training, or CBT, is a physical activity involving- but yes this is a big issue with determining lethality. Even if you wound a man at arms with your mace I feel like there's still a problem that he is now very motivated to defeat you sooner and you still haven't put him down for good. Somewhere in here is probably something about armor mitigating damage enough to allow hits to carry through what might otherwise flinch an enemy and stop the strike.

Yeah, I think that there's definitely some stuff to explore there. I suppose some techniques make way more sense when viewed through this lense

@@VirtualFechtschule Actually, secind question. What about the fist? In some situations, would it not be useful to hit the enemy in the face, especially woth an "open faced" helmet? The problem is again how the effects only work if you genuinely stun an enemy, so they cannot be replicated here, but...

Super Video.

I reckon that knight would have preferred to fight visor up in a real fight but with the constraints of being safe, couldn't.

Where do you get your swords and padded armor from?
@sunrisejackdaw1779

10:14 Hits like this look to the viewer more like a bonk or even wound. If it scraped like that across an openface helmet, the damage might be pretty bad. At the least the fighter might be stunned for a moment.

I see that, but Sigmund and I both agreed that this particular one was an unintentional hit with the flat side, so that wouldn't have done a great deal.

Are you using a Katzbalger in this video? And if so, where is it from? Thanks
@VirtualFechtschule

It's what I would call a proto-katzbalger. This one was made by Landsknecht Emporium. :)

Nice demonstration. It is very clear that even incomplete armor, with the right technique, increases your survivability dramatically. Full armor, despite the fact that it had then reached the peak of its development, restricts movement more.
@VirtualFechtschule
@VirtualFechtschule 4 ай бұрын
Yeah. I do suspect that when you really let exchangea go on for a bit longer, the mobility advantage will definitely be nullified by the fact that full armour lets you tank more. If you need to get your hit in perfectly once, you can do it, but doing it three times in a row is difficult odds. And then the balance does shift in favour of full armour I think.
@Specter_1125

That would ultimately depend on the specific harness. Some have a larger range of motion than the person wearing it, whereas others get at as close to the owner’s range of motion specifically to prevent over extension of a joint. Another important factor is how used the wearer is to wearing full armor. If they wore it repeatedly every month for years, they’d be more used to the extra weight on the legs and arms.

I wouldn't be so quick. For the sake of simplicity the blows are counted as stopping wounds with a single hit to the undersuit. But gambeson might absorb some of the wounds, and chainmail would require a solid thrust to pierce if you manage it at all.

From my experience, the effectiveness of armor highly depends on the type of fighting your are engaged in. In duel fights, full armor won't protect you much more than a half/armor. But in line fights with a lot of people involved, you'll often get hit from sides/back, you can get hit in the legs by 3rd person, or you can be hit by multiple people ar once. So full armor's protection values much more

@@VirtualFechtschule but you've also got to note that these armours are designed for battle, so fatigue plays a massive role, so perhaps taking off leg armour does increase capability, or perhaps not.

"legshot boogaloo" I see this is a case for putting greaves in the backpack instead of cutting them from battle kit entirely? :p
@VirtualFechtschule
@VirtualFechtschule 4 ай бұрын
Well, what I found is that leg shots were really not that impactful, as they were quite hard to do well. Again though, perhaps when you get to go on after hits a bit more that will change, but that's for future experiments to see. :)
