Where can you draw the line between a tool and a weapon? This is our introduction to the arsenal of the knight in melee combat. The archetypal knight wears shining armour and wields a sword but in reality he would have had access to a wide range of weaponry far more suitable for fighting opponents in full steel harness. It become the most popular weapon in the world and has been involved in more combat and killed more people than any other weapon in history. At the end of his life he said he regretted making it because of the death and destruction his creation has been a part of.

A peasant usually won't have a poleaxe (a halberd, more like. They probably bought some decent equipment for themselves), not to mention, a poleaxe would be a weapon for a well-armored knight (the difference between a poleaxe and a halberd primarily seems to be length, _and_ who uses them, curiously enough). And, getting bonked on the head usually won't result in a casualty, much less a death. Most of everyone in a battlefield would be wearing helmets, and I imagine that to be quite counterproductive in bashing someone's head open.

You can also use that Bishops hammer to crack ice for cold drinks whenever you need it too. My late husband used to make replicas of medieval weaponry and armor and we found that his Bishops Hammer came in very handy when we needed to break up a bag of crushed ice. Nice pollaxe, by the way.

I've read Miamoto Musashi's book once. And I remember that he had a nice point. He wrote that a warrior is simply a crafrsman that is trained in the art of war. And as for an exaple carpenter has his own tools, the weapons are the tools of a warrior. And as in evry other profession there are different tools for different kinds of work.

@@SirPano85 Yeah good point. But there is a thing to notice- a deeper sense. Miyamoto's "Book of Five Rings" is focused on pure fighting skill and it is adressed to warriors- figters. And Tsun Tsu wrote "The Art of War" for leaders (Actually I don't thiknk that Miamoto had an oportunity to lead an army... Or even a smaller warband). I think that explains why both authors provide different definitions for "the art of war".

There is that truly amazing point (I can't bring an exact quote) that the absolute dominance is to atchieve a victory without having to fight, but its not the same as treating a fight as a last resort. In my opinion it's like the difference between saying "It would be great if you could settle this without fighting" and "You should avoid fighting at any cost".

I would have to say that this is the first time I've ever heard someone who demonstrates blunt or bladed weaponry on jelly human targets, as it being an emotionally scary experience. There are some skulls that are cut allmost halfway through. So it was possible, but its more a wound that you'll recieve after beeing immobilised and you opponent can really load up his swing. (Those skulls have multiple smaller injuries as well). But yeahhh the test was 100% the result of a mold line breaking.

I saw a 30-years war helmet in a museum 3 weeks ago, that had a hole where the spike of a cavalrymans warhammer would have fittet perfectly.

Yeah, even if a skull did get cut in half it'd either require a broader impact (i.e. a sword stroke, axe hit, whatever) rather than a puncture like that, or it would very likely break far less evenly than the perfect split that happened here.

A weapon is a specialized tool. Whereas many tools can be used as weapons, true weapons have been refined to do just one thing, maybe two. Some weapons, like hunting tools are designed to kill a single target precisely with minimum risk to the user, some weapons are designed to represent a threat of force, such as a policeman's gun, the hope is that the threat will be enough to prevent the need of use. Some weapons however, are designed only to kill, quickly, efficiently, and in volume. I think your warhammer and pollaxe are excellent examples of this kind of weapon. Guards would have carried swords and spears, but while a knight on the battlefield might have a sword as a sidearm, but it was not his primary weapon. Love these videos, I need to sit down and start at part 1 though...

But I do agree pole-axes weren't the ak's of the medieval period either, spears and billhook/glaive weapons fit that description much closer.

I love how you protected Warlord here at 3:24 by having the skull filled with ballistic jelly. Not only does the jelly make it more realistic; but also there's too much momentum to stop the swing if the jelly wasn't there, and the hammer goes straight into Warlord's neck. This reminds me of what Anthony Cummings in his book about the Samurai and the Ninja said about the samurai. We all think the samurai's main weapon was their sword but apparently their main weapon was the spear and the bow. I think the concept still exists these days with some elite fighters. Case in point one account by a SEAL claimed that while they are trained to use pistols they normally don't bother to bring them with them, probably because their range is shorter than either the assault rifle or the submachine gun.

Pistols symbolise the status of an officer. Historically they were more likely to be used against your own soldiers to restore discipline than in any action against the enemy.

My answer to your introductory question, is that while many tools can be used to hurt your neigbour until he no longer causes trouble, there are damn few things designed specifically as weapons that are suitable to splitting firewood, driving in nails or pegs, or such things as cutting food for preparation or eating, or skinning and dressing game.
