In this video I start building the rolling ladder for the bookcase. This is part 1 of 2. In this part I build the wooded ladder out of an oak board. I was able to purchase this board from a local lumber store not a big box store. The allthread is from any local hardware store. I was able to purchase the sleeve nuts and hanger bolts from the link:

Thank you for sharing, This is very helpful! I never would have thought to make jigs to make the router passes to save time. Thanks a bunch for making this!

The ladder looks great, and you have some great ideas, for the templates, but you need to learn how to run a router correctly! As you do the round over cuts, you are actually performing a "climb cut", as you are moving the router in a clockwise direction. Unless there is a specific reason for doing this cut, it is much safer to do a "push cut", which means you move the router from the left side of the board to the right side (counter clockwise). To better understand this, watch any number of router basics videos, for further explanation.

you can get cleaner cuts with the miter saw if you extend the saw to its full length and bringing it down in front of the piece to be cut without touching it yet and the cut by sliding the blade back into it.

That is a great tip! Thank you. I will have to give that a try in my next shop build.

I added the entire hardware and lumber list to my Home Depot cart and it came out to be $304.12…. It’d be much easier and cheaper to buy a sliding barn door hardware kit, with the lumber and castor wheels than going through this whole process.🥴😭 But I do like the craftsmanship of the final product.🎉

Ah. This ladder was built way before the C19 price hike. Sad to hear it's so costly now.

Also if anyone reads this, please don’t run your router bit backwards like at 17:37. It can be dangerous

Thank you for sharing your beautiful bookcase build. It is gorgeous and I can’t wait to try to make the ladder. We don’t have a router though so I’m not sure what to do about that. Do you think a store bought wooden ladder can be adapted for the hardware. Thanks so much 😀
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! I am not sure about the store bought ladder. Now you might be able to make several passes with a table saw as long as you have the guide set to the right angle.

Instead of using a jig and router couldn't you use a mitre gauge and a dado on a table saw?
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 7 жыл бұрын
Yes you sure can. I do not have one of those dado blades. It would be important to have the angle just right.

Land to House im planning to make a "library ladder" type rig for my kitchen (read that as a rail hung step stoo)l about 36 inches tall or so so realisticly only 3 steps tall maybe a 4th and the place im at now has a really nice dado set that would cut down on time something fierce imo and im going to be using white ash for the project
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 7 жыл бұрын
Very cool! I hope my video gave you some ideas. Let me know when you have the project done. I would like to see it. I have another ladder to make in the next few months for my workshop storage. ... When I build those too. haha I might want to use your dado idea.

Those metal rods looks really bad, it would be possible to easily avoid them.
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 6 жыл бұрын
aww I thought they looked alright. you can buy other rods or go without. I like the way they hold the ladder together. Now buying the actual hardware was absolutely ridiculous.

I think it would be better to find hardware specific for the ladders
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 6 жыл бұрын
You can certainly buy them. The problem is the full ladder kit is $1500+ considering I built this one for only 10% of that it was well worth it.

@@LandtoHouse I like the basic idea. I would probably route a small gap in the back of each step and use that for housing the threaded rods so they are hidden from view more.
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 6 жыл бұрын
Great idea. Perhaps this build is just a stepping stone for even better builds. Hidden threads is a good idea.
