This is the second part of the rolling library ladder build. In the first part I built the wooden ladder. In this part I build and install the metal hardware. This style ladder is rather expensive if you buy it commercially. My total build was around $100.
If you missed part 1 you can watch it here:

This is a really neat project, I'd bet you could make sliding barn doors for your tool shed with the same hardware. Installing hanger bolts is easier by putting 2 nuts on the bolt end, and tightening them against each other, then you can use a socket wrench to screw it in just like its a hex-head lag screw and not damage any of the threads.

Really like this video. Would you add a material list? ( mainly the hardware) The one I build will be approximately 10' across the room. The ladder is already built. Thank you in advance.

Really good video, gave me some inspiration. Designing one to have in my garage, it´s gonna be a bit taller though, around 10 feet tall. Maybe one slider in the middle for extra support. Thanks

Thank you for watching. Yes adding another slider in the middle would give more support. I have been on this one a few times and there have been no issues.

Great job! I hope to do something similar in the next year. If you were to have a track with a 90 degree curve in it, would you need to modify the wheels on the ladder to allow the ladder to move along the curved part of the track?

For a first ladder build I thought it was alright. My second ladder build was better.

This is perfect. I’m hoping to copy this design exactly. What’s the diameter of the pipe ? 1 inch ?
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. The outer diameter is almost 1" the inner i think was only 1/2"

I like your idea for the rollers. I also am not a fan of the "off the shelf" units as they require you to leave a space so that the ladder can roll onto the rail. This way you don't have to and you get to use the whole wall...noice!!!!
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 7 жыл бұрын
Oh I did not know they had to have the space on the side. This is much better then.

In what way did you change the angle iron to accommodate your “less than square” install? Did you cut them longer than 4”? Thanks!

Good build and design. Just one question...as the rollers are bolted and fixed to the angle iron, how are you able to move the ladder up a few inches to push it towards the wall to store when not being used? (All the "store bought" ladders have a sliding feature for the rollers...about 4" or so)
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 3 жыл бұрын
This ladder does not store like that. I am sure it could built that way though. The ladder only sticks out a little from the wall so its not bad.

The reason these cost $1600.00 is to pay for the liability insurance. Not trying to be negative, your craftsmanship is superb.

Where would one get U wheels? I've seen people do do hacks to get something similar to these from taking apart other things and have seen them in small sizes on ebay. I don't see these at the Depot. Concerned about get a matching size and strength.. Any ideas? Can you share more on this? Thanks much. Making a similar design so this has helped alot!

Hi. I went right to Ebay for my U wheels. There are several sizes and they are priced well. You should be able to just search groove U wheel. goo.gl/ucdNCR

I suppose I can see ... $400 + hardware. But $1600 is a bit much still. I have a feeling they use some large tools to make the ladders faster. Thank you!

@@LandtoHouse I just did a rolling ladder from a company who specializes in making the ladders and the hardware. I just finished a job a week ago. I guess for someone who may have a lot of time on their hands, they could do it your way, but there are several things I don’t think you realize could be, and/or are an issue When you stand on the ladder, there’s nothing to hold it in place, and could be very dangerous for a child to climb up on it, and easily fall off from the ladder sliding down the rail. If you have high spots or low spots in the floor, that would cause the ladder to not move at that area or not be in contact with the floor, which can also be a big issue The metal rod below the step is way too far and if that step did have a break, it would slide right past your metal rod. I guess it’s probably different for me because I do this as a living, being a custom cabinet maker, and there is no way on the screen earth would my customer ever accept that method. Sure you think $1600 is a lot of money, but if you look at the amount of time you spent doing what you did, I can guarantee you lost your ass
