Oh Gary thank you so very much for watching and commenting. You've made my 2024! Emma is coming along nicely now with the first sailing anticipated in early spring. Flyer is also coming along well in parallel with Emma so that's all to look forward to. Best wishes to you and yours for 2024. Peter

Watched again Peter, and enjoyed a second time. I haven't started my build next - I'm still working slightly more than part time and it's hard to get organized. Thanks once more. Tom (from France)

Thanks Tom. Yes I'm finding it difficult to find time for Flyer. The hull is all together and about ready for the primer /undercoat but the humidity is high which isn't good for drying paint. Best to take your time over a build I think and then you'll be much more satisfied with the final result. I'm pleased you find the video helpful. Good wishes. Peter

Oh my, blushing here 😌. What I cannot grasp is how folk play a musical instrument... My brain and fingers simply aren't connected 😂 I'd love to be able to get beyond my 'learn keyboard, book 1' but it just seems to be quite beyond me. Instead I listen to piano virtuoso (i?) and be transported to other worlds... 🤗

Puffin is beautiful, Peter. You have a keen eye and a steady hand, and a great deal of skill. I have over the years dabbled in model airplanes (I am a notoriously bad pilot, but very accomplished at rebuild and repair 😮😮), model trains (O, On30, and N scale efforts), but only one boat built many years ago when I was 12 or 13 and refreshed when I was a bit older (a kit built sail boat about the size of Puffin, but no remote control - she sits now on blocks aside the bathtub, big yellow sails my mother sewed for me).

Hello Paul and thank you. I find that building these boats works well alongside the motorcycling as when it's not ideal for riding I can pop to the workshop and do some woodworking. This yacht build is a new experience as it's a first time build for my friend Nick so we're able to share thoughts and it's working well. Once our boating bond reopens in February we should both be ready to launch. I'll be filming both from the shore but also have an on board camera so that should be fun. At the moment I'm working on that Christmas Story though 🎄🎅

Ooooh another model boat video !!!! I can already tell that even if I had all of the power tools required, I simply wouldn't have the patience to build something that looks that nice. Even if I followed the plans to the best of my ability, I'd probably end up with something resembling a poorly made spice rack 😂 Maybe I should give it a go and then make a video "Can you guess what it was supposed to be ?" 🤔 Excellent work Peter. Jack would be proud of you ! Cheers, Garry & Ruby

😂. I know that what seems come sort of naturally to me isn't the same for everyone as I have tried learning to play keyboard, for example and whilst I can produce a recognisable tune I can't seem to get beyond the first tuition book. Brain and fingers don't work together in this instance! This is rather a nice feeling building the same design with friend Nick (his very first) so we can share ideas. Enjoy your weekend there, both. Hello Richard. That's wonderful. Yes isn't Emma beautiful. Lovely to build too. Gary has a really great design there. I'm hoping to sail 'Puffin' in a couple of weeks together with my friend Nick who is building his and nearly there with completing it. Thank you for telling me of yours. I have just subscribed to you - good to meet a fellow Bearospace enthusiast. I see you've also built Flyer. Happy sailing, Peter

Thank you Dave but in reality I have only just enough talent to get by with. I'm patient, which is an asset doing anything, I think. As I've mentioned to a couple of friends, I think the modelling complements the motorcycling as today for example. Heavy rain and winds mean no riding so I'm out in the workshop 'whittling' 😁

@@Lanes-Explorer5733 you’re far to modest Peter, patience accompanied by skill, that’s what I see with what you’re creating there. That looks great Peter. Coincidentally, I have been following some posts by the Dundee Model Boat Club on Facebook. If you haven’t seen them, they are definitely worth a look. They play their videos of boats under way in slow motion. It makes them look so realistic, especially the motion of bow waves etc. I have built full sized boats and still sail regularly as crew on a 34ft keeler, so I find what you are doing with model boats quite interesting. Would love to see how this latest project progresses. All the best, Roy.

Thanks Roy and although I don't do Facebook I see there's videos of their boats on KZbin so I'll be looking at those. That must be a real sense of satisfaction to build your own boat and then crew it too. I was saying today to my close friends at the model boat club that if we three pooled our skills we could build an ocean going yacht and just sail away... ⛵

Launch date? Nicely built boat. But even small fin keels need an airfoil section to provide lift when going up-wind. The nice thing about this build is you could make as many different shaped fins as you want, to do the experiment to find the best foil profile.

Well Peter, that was interesting. Funnily enough, I've just bought the plans for Emma and for Flyer from Gary Webb's Bearospace. I was very attracted by the models, which have an old-fashioned but realistic look about them. And I love gaff rigs. But this is my first model yacht build - I've been more intersted in aeroplanes until now. Like you and your pal, I also have a certain number of wood working tools to help the construction. I'd be interested to know what you are going to use for the rigging - the shrouds. Gary (whose "old salt" delivery I very much enjoy in his videos) talks about "tarred twine", I think. Have you found anything like that in the UK? I live in France, and haven't started looking yet, but I'd like to hear what you think. I see that this video is nine months old, so probably Puffin is sailing away by now. By the way, I thought the plans were great value, and very complete. But it cost me over 100 euros to get them printed in France, where some things cost a lot. Thanks for the post. Best wishes, Tom

Hello Tom and great to hear you're going to be building both Emma and Flyer. Yes both Puffin and friend Nick's Emma (Barney G) are now complete and very beautiful to see they are too when under sail. We both made the top sails for them which we highly recommend for light breezes - they also look good too. It was Nick that sourced the tarred seine twine which we used for the shrouds and I'll ask him where he obtained it . Our Flyers are progressing well but I'm so pleased we built our Emmas first to learn the build design as Flyer, though very similar is a deal more complex. I'll let you know about the twine and post it as a reply here as soon as I have the information. If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask. We sent off for the paper plans from Gary and shipping costs from the States was pretty expensive, coupled with the plans cost meant your option was the cheaper way to do it. But these are just such lovely boats to build and sail and Gary puts so much effort into the design we certainly are very pleased. There's a video of Puffin on the lake which I published about 4 months ago entitled 'Puffin takes to the water' I'm not sure if I can post a link to it for you kzbin.info/www/bejne/an7HgIFun7asp9ksi=79xwAY5e56s9mdh9 Best wishes, Peter

@@Lanes-Explorer5733 Thanks Peter, for that kind reply. I didn't tell you how lovely I thought Puffin was looking already in that 9-month old video. I would be very intersted to hear about the tarred twine if you have time to post some information about its source, so thanks in advance. There's a lot going on in my life at the moment, so I'm not sure when I'll be getting down to building first Emma and then Flyer, but I hope it's sooner rather than later. Thanks again, and best wishes. Tom

Thank you Tom. The 'Mariner' tarred twisted nylon seine twine 18gauge is from' The Bushcraft Store 'on Ebay. Cost for a large reel in the UK is about £13. Enough to do both yachts easily.

Traditional model making, there were a lot of folk who used to do that when I first started out but ready made models seems to be the way of the world. Really impressive workmanship Peter 👍 I have a bunch of Model Shipwright journals packed with lots of interesting stuff for traditional model makers in immaculate condition and it is time to move them on, would you like them Peter? For free of course.

Oh that's such a kind offer, Alex but I fear I'll have to say not as we have a library at our model boat club with The Model Shipwright and Model Boats magazines going back many years right up to the latest issue. But by incredible coincidence, Roy has just sent a message about the Dundee model boat club which meets at the Swannie? Lake. They're on Facebook which I don't do but I'm sure they would be very grateful for them. Thanks again Alex. Peter

@@Lanes-Explorer5733 Yes indeed I know of the model boat club at the Swannie Ponds (Stobsmuir Ponds were once part of the water supplies to Dundee) and they have featured in one or two of my videos, the Honda CL500 video starts there (the thumbnail has the ponds in the background). I am not on any other social media either.

The angled spar holding the top of the sail out from the mast is called a sprit, hence the name sprit rig or sprit sail

And of course I can always watch my older videos to enjoy a bit of sunshine 🌞. Both Nick who is also building the Bearospace Emma design and myself are hoping to get them ready about the same time - middle /end of February I think. Sail making at present - which is a challenge as sewing fabric isn't my strong point. However - I'm definitely improving now I'm on the second attempt. And it does mean that this yacht will be 100% my own work, which pleases me. Enjoy your summer 😎

very deep rudder , i first thought it was a deep rear keel board ;;; i had to delete mt comment quick when you showed the centre keel operation -- phew ;;
@Lanes-Explorer5733 Жыл бұрын
😂 Yes the keel is 18 inches long and 7lbs in weight. It will be touch and go as to whether it clears the bottom of the pond but the design gives an alternative shorter keel fin but an extra 1 pound heavier which I'd prefer not to use. Out on the Lake itself it would be fine with the deep keel of course.
