I just got one Lang jujube today. I live in a cold city in the snowy winter. Then I think I put it on the container same ur.hope my tree be ok
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard 4 жыл бұрын
It doesn’t get that cold in my area. I have it growing in a container because of its invasive root system. These trees are listed as hardy down to the mid 20’s F, but I would defiantly give it some protection from the cold for your area. Best of luck to you and thank you for watching.

Amazing growth must be your soil mixture, look so healthy and strong root growth. Do you fill the hole with the same mixture if your were to transplant into the ground?
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard

Yes, they are doing really well. I use a different method for planting trees in my yard. The ground is mostly clay soil that is heavily compacted. I’ve had to do extensive work prepping planting areas and amending the soil in order to improve drainage. If you watch my previously uploaded video titled “Royal Lee and Minnie Royal Cherry Tree High density planting” I talk about the ground prep. I hope you find the info in that video useful. Thanks for watching!

why did you plant it in a grow bag? will you keep them in grow bags? i have a shanxi li and i'm trying to figure out whether i should put in a grow bag or pot.
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard Жыл бұрын
According to info from nursery and research I’ve done on Jujube trees, they have an invasive root system. They will also produce shoots that develop off their roots. I have limited space in my backyard and I didn’t want them taking over so I decided to use growbags in order to control their growth. I was a bit concerned they might not be able to produce a good amount of fruit, but they have been doing well. They are currently in 20 gal growbags. Within another year or two I will likely transplant them 1 last time into a large (24x24x24) wooden container. Thank you for visiting!

@Zone10aBackyardOrchard

Yes, they ship them out bare root packed with moist wood shavings. They are shipped while dormant, but will put on growth fast soon as they come out of dormancy.

My Li and Sugar Cane both have flower buds now. Don’t know if yours have buds yet. Also, don’t know when and how to fertilize them at this point. Mine are also in containers. Any suggestions? Thx much!
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard 3 жыл бұрын
Both of mine are just starting to form flower buds. I fertilize mine with a light application of 10-10-10 organic fertilizer in early spring then again in summer. Once a year in spring I also give all my container grown trees a top soil dressing (worm casting, chicken manure, peat moss, organic soil mix and azomite). Please check out my video titled “My 1st harvest off a Mexicola Avocado tree growing in a container”. I talk a little about the top soil mix in that video. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Grow in container when winter do you water for jujube tree ? I have one ga866 jujube on the ground 1 year grow very slow not like your in container , thank you very much
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard 3 жыл бұрын
I cut down on the watering during winter months while it is dormant. I check the soil to see if its damp before watering. Usually I only need to water about every 10 to 15 days in winter. Your tree will be much different since it is planted in the ground. If your tree is not putting on good growth, have you considered adding a top soil dressing of worm castings? Please check out my video titled “My 1st harvest off a Mexicola Avocado tree growing in a container”. It’s a different type of tree, but the top dressing is good for most all trees. Thank you for watching!

How can one tell the difference between Li and lang..? They named the one i bought Giuggolo, all they can tell me is its an Italian variant.
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard 7 ай бұрын
That is a difficult question to answer. The leaves, flowers are similar. The growth habit of the Lang is more spreading/wide than the Li. If you only have one tree and you are not sure if it is a Li or Lang, you will know after the flowering cycle. The Lang requires a pollinator so if it doesn’t set any fruit or only a very small amount set, then it is likely a Lang. Also, if your tree does set fruit, google Jujube Varieties. You might be able to ascertain the variety by comparing fruit size, shape and color. I hope this helps.

Hello, do u have to move it to a bigger bag in the future? I'm picking up a jujube tree but not sure what variety. I dont want to put it into the ground so thinking about using growbag. Also, is it ok if I wanna bury the bag halfway or 3/4 of the height into the ground?
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard 3 жыл бұрын
Hello David, I will likely upsize the container, but not for at least another couple of years. As far as variety, please keep in mind that the Lang requires a pollinator and the Li is a good choice for that. I recently came across another variety that I am interested in picking up (Honey Jar Jujube). It’s supposed to among the sweetest tasting varieties and it is self-pollinating. On your question of burring the growbag, keep in mind that the roots will likely grow thru the bag if you bury it. I’ve never buried any of my growbags, but I do know that if they sit on the ground (soil) the roots will penetrate the growbag cloth and grow into the ground. Thanks for watching and I hope this helps.

They still doing well in containers? Thinking of doing the same? Also would a single Li be good or recommend getting bother a Li and Lang for pollination?
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard 3 жыл бұрын
The Li is still dormant, but the Lang is just starting to leaf out. Both did well growing in containers last season and put on a good amount of growth. They flowered, but neither produced any fruit (may have been too young to hold on to fruit). Hopefully, now that they are a year older, I’ll get my first crop. The Li is self-pollinating, but I was told by nursery that I would get a more productive crop if it was pollinated by the Lang. Personally, I believe both would be best, but nothing wrong with just buying the Li to see how it does on its own. You can pick up a Lang later on if you’re not happy with its production. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

What is the purpose of paperbacks, cardboards and wood chips?
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard 3 жыл бұрын
I also added some worm castings which will hopefully contain worm eggs. The paper and cardboard will provide a source of food for the worms as the material breaks down. The wood chips help retain moisture and will serve to improve the overall health of you soil. The cardboard and wood chips also help to keep weeds and grass from popping up.
