That’s a beautiful piece of music. Love Lang Lang’s performance as well.

I'm not always fully satisfied with Lang Lang's interpretations but I like him very much because he gives music the freedom it does deserve in his interpretations. A clear definition of music not being sound but sound being a tool through which music is expressed. If one looks at all his recordings of this Waltz here on KZbin you'd observe he plays same at a slightly different tempo in each case. As a pianist myself, I like that. It shows he plays with his emotions, his state of mind at any given point in time and not just with his fingers. A true musician should never be conventional but use sound to emotionalize his music. Hats off to Lang Lang!!

feel the same about him. He is a great pianist, truly can't deny that, but his performances are sometimes not easy to get used to. I think he has really improved though. He has worked on himself for sure.

👍 to Lang Lang’s 🌟 talented 🎹 playing! I’m now going on 70, and was a trained classical pianist (like you) and organist since I was 5. I was taught from the start to learn how to read the notes from sheet music. After achieving this, I was encouraged to play them in my OWN personal, unique style - adapting and interpreting them as I ‘felt’ the music (although not actually drastically changing the original, such as the key or notes, etc.). IMO I feel that Lang Lang’s style is his OWN, and his playing is always done with such passion and heartfelt emotion, which is why I don’t dislike anything he plays - from classical to Disney’s music themes, duets with people such as Sting, Bocelli - and everything in between. I’ve read a lot about his background, and how he was very intrigued and influenced by Goldberg’s Bach variations, Gould, Barenboim, along with studying at Curtis for some examples. I often think he’s even better than some of those who taught him! He had explained too how he uses both the right and left sides of his brain when playing, the reasons for differences between the ‘tone’ and the ‘feeling’ of each when using the major and minor keys, etc. in much more detail. *FYI: If you notice how often he lifts his hands/fingers in the air and off the keys, this is a technique he picked up from Gould, and if you watch him play, he has a very flamboyant style and appearance - much more so than LL!

@elainemeyer5062 thanks for this. I instantly recalled the technique you mentioned watching Gould's videos here on KZbin. Quite clearly, Lang Lang is an outstanding pianist.

@@savanner.6525Personally I don’t have ANY trouble in ‘getting used’ to hearing LL’s ‘different’ interpretations when playing anything as he does, regardless of how they’re done! It’s THIS ‘unique’ style of his that makes him stand out for me as possibly THE most talented 🎹ist today!

I don't like many interpretations by Lang Lang, but he is a great pianist one cannot deny that. This performance is interesting, I like it. Though it is very different than the usual one.

To all of you saying this is the WORST interpretation... well, he's not one to care. This interpretation captures his aloofness and disregard for anyone else's feelings. He's Lang Lang, and not anybody else. -_- the little twat :P

Brilliant, incredibly skilled Pianist, no doubt about that. But in my opinion, he's playing many passages way too fast which leads to a lot of emotion being lost.

Those people didn't go there to listen to him playing an emotional piece. The most important thing for a random audience is entertainment and that, Lang Lang delivers.

Th3FiGhtEr03 That’s totally what i was thinking. He managed to play the whole thing in a way that could captivate the public’s attention and then slowed down around 2:30 , playing some really light notes when the crowd was captivated and ready to feel some emotions. Then he switched back to the mad pianist mode to surprise them. Such a great pianist that knows how to make his own interpretations, and adapt them to his audience.
@dancingdan1118

I have to disagree. Anywhere he slows down, he always catches back up to tempo. your definitely missing the emotion and point of this piece. Music is supposed to be interpreted many different ways. Besides, are you really critiquing THE Lang Lang like that? 😂You can't say he's 'Brilliant, incredibly skilled' and then throw his performance in the trash.

Andy Not sticking to the original piece does mean sucking. He knew that most of the public had never been into classical music. Therefore he managed to play the whole thing in a way that could captivate the public’s attention and then slowed down around 2:30 , playing some really light notes when the crowd was captivated and ready to feel some emotions. Then he switched back to the mad pianist mode to surprise them. Such a great pianist that knows how to make his own interpretations, and adapt them to his audience.
