I don't care how brilliantly he played the coda at the end, it just doesn't GO like that! Did it ever occur to him that he might listen to Prokofiev's own recording to get some idea of the intended tempo? (Of course I'm tempted to guess that he wouldn't even care a damn). And you know what gets very old? His 'triumphant' everhead clenched fist at the end. . . just one of his countless gestures that demonstrate the irrepressible love he has for himself. It's probably safe to say that such a towering level of arrogance has never been seen in a 'classical' performer, and we ought to hope that nothing like this should ever come our way again.

Vulgar beyond anything that could be imagined! Chopin's Waltz in E-flat isn't the kind of piece that should ever tempt a pianist to brutalize it , as Lang does here. Not only should HE be ashamed for "uglifying" this charming work, but so should his listeners who (no surprise here) applauded enthusiastically. And regarding the Prokofiev concerto, the way he thrashed through the last pages at an excessive speed not indicated by the composer is truly abysmal, and of course the easy-to-fool audience loved it to pieces.

I loved Lang Lang!! He’s capable of many great things but does anyone else agree many take this piece too fast.. There’s so much character lost at this speed. Especially the ending. Wang plays it this fast too. Also the video should be on ONE person and that’s the concerto player, every now and then the conductor and a soloist ... and yet this is rarely the case 🤣
@wwbdwwbd3 жыл бұрын
This is Jarvi's signature fast tempi. He prefers fast tempi for almost everything, although I'm sure Lang didn't complain too much because he's more than technically capable of playing it at this ungodly speed. If you haven't already, I would suggest listening to LL's recording of this same piece conducted by Simon Rattle. The tempii are slower and give more room for nuance, and LL's playing was absolutely luminous. Simply transcendent.

No, the conductor was to 'blame'. Jarvi conducts EVERYTHING at faster tempi than his colleagues. He's famous for that. As for you not being able to follow everything, it could have a lot to do with the crappy video and audio quality - 128kbps is simply inadequate for anything classical, much less Prokofiev. Lang's recording of this same piece with Rattle conducting was played at slower tempii. Give that a try, and you won't regret it.
