I like these longer videos. Just remember that some don't have big screens so some text can be hard to read. Also, Zimbax doing his mandatory military service right now so if you continue like this some of his subscribers might find their way here.

in portugal we have rly good knowledge of english, and a normal person speak atleast 3 languages, portugues, english and spanish, and some people even french, from school
@PolyglotMouse

Yes, it is true that people from Portugal are proficient in English and they would have knowledge from Romance languages such as French and Spanish, especially because they border Spain, however this doesn't mean that they speak it. English learning is taken much more seriously than optional language classes such as French, meaning that people learn the language in school but are not proficient enough to say that they speak it. On top of that, the constant interaction between Portugal and Spain would make it so they would not need to learn the language as the two are extremely similar and the constant exposure would only boost that mutual intelligibility. Im sure people who study and/or vacation in those areas pick up the basics of the language, anyway. Sorry for the long reply! Just wanted to explain my thought process 😅

@@PolyglotMouse but every portuguese can speak portuguese and english fluent, and be rly good at spanish, but there is just 1 language, we see american and british tv shows, and we learn english because of that, and spanish because we also like spanish tv shows, and for a portuguese you just need to change the accent, and the endings of words
@PolyglotMouse
@PolyglotMouse 6 ай бұрын
Yes, I phrased it wrong. A majority of the Portuguese population speaks English, so they are fluent in at least one other language. However, many don't learn Spanish just because they don't need to. They basically understand everything already. I'm sure they pick up a lot of words, though

@@PolyglotMouse yes, but we can speak spanish, even with mistakes we would be able to chat, but in the video it says just , in portugal we are really proud of speak multiple languages, i even understand italian like 80% and a bit of french, without even have contact with the language, our accent is really closed vowels, so we can understand this other latin languages because we are already accustomed with difficult sounds

1. Yes, you are proving my point. You may speak a bit of Spanish, but you are not proficient in it, at least not as much as in English because based on your writing alone, I can tell that you are pretty much fluent. 2. Obviously, you understand Italian and French because you speak a romance language (although I can barely understand French myself and I speak Spanish) 3. This is not meant to bring you down or anything. In reality, I'm jealous that you guys have high proficiency and good education in multiple languages. As an American, I had to learn all of my independently because of how bad the world language education is here 🤣

Wikipedia only comes in 26 different languages? 😕
@PolyglotMouse
@PolyglotMouse 9 ай бұрын
No, according to Wikipedia theirself, Wikipedia comes in 334 languages, but the reason 26 is shown here is because these are the languages in which each respective country has the most articles written in. Took me a little while to phrase that, so tell me if you don't understand lol

@@PolyglotMouse So if we take South Africa as an example, they have 7 (?) official languages but most articles are written in English. So you speak Norwegian. May I ask way you picked that language? And would you understand if I wrote something in Swedish?
@PolyglotMouse
@PolyglotMouse 9 ай бұрын
@reineh3477 1. Yes it doesn't consider all languages in a country 2. I've always been interested in Norwegian literature and mythology and decided to just decided to go for it. It's a pretty straightforward language, has many similarities with English and it's pronunciation is unique. I most likely would understand a word here and there if you wrote something in Swedish but that's because I am a complete beginner having only started 2 weeks ago yet have been progressing quite rapidly. If I was fluent, however, then I would be able to understand virtually everything you wrote with the occasional word being different. This is the same with Danish. All languages can read each other's writing. Norwegian in particular is considered the gap between the two languages, especially through speaking. One last thing, somebody who learns Bokmål would be able to understand writing from the other North Germanic languages but somebody who learns Nynorsk might have a little bit more difficulty as there are some different grammar rules and spelling differences. Don't worry though as over 90% of published writing is in Bokmål and the other is in Nynorsk and most people only learn the latter once they have finished mastering Bokmål or if they were to travel to a region where Nynorsk is used more. Sorry for the long response, just wanted to give you as much info as possible 😊 if you couldn't tell I love languages!

@@PolyglotMouse yes I agree with you, Norwegian is probably quite easy if you speak English. What I find strange is that Swedish and Danish is east Norse while Norwegian and Icelandic is west Norse. Because spoken Danish is hard to understand unless they speak very slow and I doubt a Norwegian would understand Icelandic. But most Swedes and Norwegians would be able to follow a tv-program in the other language without subtitles. I even use the Norwegian Wikipedia when I can't find an article written in Swedish. About similarities, I remember all the fights I had with my teachers, they said that English is a French language while I said that it is a Germanic language with a lot of French words.
@PolyglotMouse
@PolyglotMouse 9 ай бұрын
@reineh3477 That is most likely because Icelandic is very similar to Old Norse and Norway conquered and settled in Iceland during the viking era. Also I agree that English is Germanic with most of its vocabulary being French. It being a French language doesn't make any sense lol

The Chinese language map is whether outdated or unprofessional though… first of all that’s not how you classify Mandarin, there’re many varieties of Mandarins, like Beijing, Central Plain, Southwestern (they got this one right), while northern and eastern are not ones of them. Second, the altai theory has been abandoned already
