Good thing « the notes don’t matter Adam ! » 😉 During the first listen I was desperately trying to hear what was going on with this Autumn Leaves solo you mention 😳 I was like « Man, this is far beyond my level even harmonically and I’m not sure I like it » and then realised it was All the Things You Are 🤣

Great choice! Yes, more of these would be very welcome. Blessed to be introduced to the work of this modern master, Gerald Clayton!

Gerald Clayton must be one of the greatest modern players. Thx for highlighting his playing and understanding the meter better. Harmonically interesting stuff too.

having some tigran on here would be great. And not only focusing on his compositional/rhytmic concepts, theres already alot of stuff on that. But a video about his actual improvisational language would be great.

I had not heard Gerald Clayton until today. Thanks, Adam! He reminds a bit of Andrew Hill. Actually, a lot of Andrew Hill. Lovely!

Please bring back the Donna Lee lesson episode! I suspect it was blocked yesterday due to copyright but how if you muted the original music, can you bring it back? I watched 1/3 of it and was so looking forward to finishing it !!! Thanks

Love this more modern bop language!! Would love some Wynton Marsalis stuff in this format! Thanks for the podcasts and free golden stuff! Hearing you guys breakdown concepts has helped me to break out of my apathy for solitary studying during this pandemic!

What happened to the Greatest Theory Lesson @ Donna Lee? I had to pause it when company showed up at my house, when I went back it had been taken down. Was really looking forward to it. Thanks for a great channel.

Can we get an episode like this about Keith Jarrett? I’m afraid we will lose this legend soon because of his current condition.

It's not jarring or off-putting. And it's pretty. Great lines. But doesn't swing. Maybe it doesn't have to swing? Would it sound just as good in 4? 🤷 But I think that it elicits these sorts of questions. 👍

I just came across Gerald in Roy Hargrove's 'Strasbourg - St. Denis' live version found on YTB (kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmG6iXiwrL-CrJI), which was a revelation. What a funky mastermind he is.... BTW, transcription done by this fellow: kzbin.info/www/bejne/goSvkpSPp76desk

Is it just me or are there incomplete measures when its in 5 and there is only a whole rest to represent the bar? Seems like it's missing a count.

Aren’t you actually counting 5/4 at the beginning (4:12)? But the 2 half notes 2 dotted quarter notes counting tip is super useful! 🙂 👏
@ellman10
@ellman10 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I also noted that. He's playing 2 dotted quarters and 2 quarters (rather than halves) which is 5/4. 7/4 would be - ta ta taaaa taaaa rather than taa taa ta ta (-;

When Franzt Liszt composed the B minor piano sonata, his contemporaries hated it and bashed him for it and 100yrs later, the B minor sonata is the epitome in the classical repertoire.....moral of the story,, if you don't understand a musical language well enough, shut your mouth instead of sounding like a fool
