Language teachers unite: Collectively we thrive! | Tammy Gregersen

Although maintaining our well-being involves individual effort and personal responsibility, our ability to flourish and thrive also depends on the people around us and the institution(s) of which we are a part. While mindfulness, journaling and other individual pursuits can indeed be impactful, well-being is a shared endeavour where “other people matter” and where institutions play a key role. This session begins with why social networks benefit teachers and then shifts into how teachers can empower each other. It ends with evidence gathered from language teachers around the world about the role institutions play in fostering teacher well-being.

Tammy Gregersen is the Director of the Intensive English Center in the Office of International Affairs at Tennessee State University. Before her current position, she was a professor of TESOL at the American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, the University of Northern Iowa in the USA and Universidad de Atacama, in Chile. She received her MA in Education and PhD in Linguistics in Chile, where she also began her academic career. She has written eight books, published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and contributed numerous chapters in applied linguistics anthologies on individual differences, teacher education, language teaching methodology, positive psychology and nonverbal communication in language classrooms. She is passionate about exploring other cultures and is committed to spreading the news about the value of well-being pursuits.
