Cool project, between your ideas and Tomislav I am going to be busy!. I noticed Tomislav on his monthly project did 2 colours and then sanded back, that may be something that would work well on the textures.

painting them white or silver inside will add a nice reflective surface without adding to the weight or expense

After making half a dozen of these I find it is easier to make all the outside design BEFORE I drill out the middle. I can keep tail stock support, and this leaves only the final fit for the tea light that has a potential for some vibration. Then I can finish the top and copula. I have been turning the piece around and using my extended pen jaws for some techniques. My wife suggested adding a piece of clear acrylic on the inside to serve as a lens. This also adds some different options as this is available in a multitude of colors.

Thanks for the inspiration. I have several of these turned now, using some 2" square maple from a roadside find. I've been using 1" holes, but that takes careful layout.

That is awesome! I find 7/8" to work well for me.

Having made my first one with slightly undersized stock I found that I can hold the square stock in the chuck jaws and then part turn , I then add the mark out lines and as the stock still has flats its very easy to do the holes etc. The big mistake I make was not leaving enough wood to hold in the chuck for the top so had to hold from the turned base with a cork on my tailstock to support while I finished the top off. But great project and I know there will be a bunch more done before Christmas.

Most any dry hardwood. Watch this video re: lathe selection. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWG8dZqqmsR2bbM Lots of great lathes out there with quality and capacity and budget considerations. Good lathes are often available used. Join a club as many bargains are by word of mouth.

Mike, where and how do you sign your lanterns. I’ve been asked recipients of the ornaments to put a makers mark on my creations.

Good question I never stopped to think about on this project. I have always found a place to add name or at least initials (for example on the inside wall of an acorn box). I suppose I would put the date and initials on the bottom rim. I have a very fine tip pyrography pen but an archival ink pen would do well. I guess I may need to sand off some finish off the bottom and do that now. I was having so much fun turning I never gave it a thought which is unusual.
