I live in Málaga. For the last week or more, we’ve had hellacious wind, which in itself is difficult but additionally, it covers the roads in dust, grit and all sorts of slippery shit. So these guys are very wise to give each other a lot of room. We’ve also had several calimas, red dust storms from the Sahara, that have covered all of Andalucía, most of Spain and a lot of southern Europe in red clay dust; buildings, streets and wind turbines.

I have an explanation for the filthy wind turbine. Looks like a GE turbine (or a very similar design). Unlike most turbines (that have a fibreglass shroud over the nose cone) the blade pitch bearing seals are exposed (bearing is auto-greased with a pump and purges grease) and can only be accessed to be cleaned by abseil. Most turbines (i.e. Vestas) you can climb into the nose cone to wipe the seals. Source: I've spent a couple of months scraping grease off GE turbines in Australia so they don't end up like that.

@@VN-je7rf Definitely an oversight. That design also means that the maintenance guys are exposed to a fall potential (clipped on in a harness) when they need to access the hub to work on the pitch motors. You have to climb out of the nacelle, step across the void and through a hatch in the hub rather than just climbing through safely from inside. Not all engineers are created equal!

I think the breakaway could have been caught yesterday (especially with the crosswinds) but there were just so many teams represented that no one was gonna pace in the peloton. I read only two teams missed the break and none of those teams are strong enough to bring back a large break that strong.
