Magnus Cort is an absolute unit for nearly pulling Powless into the yellow jersey. Could not figure out why EF was chasing at all from the peloton, they even had position to slow it down on two of the sectors, but didn't. If he had just played it safe near the front I don't think anyone would have been able to touch Wout on this stage, he crashed, chased like hell, dropped back again and then chased all the way back to the GC group after going HARD everyday thus far, especially stage 4. That was the most impressive defenses of the yellow jersey I think I've ever seen. Zero chill the entire stage, this felt like a one day race. If the organizers ever do this again, it should be the day prior to a rest day. Stage 6 is going to be cruel, I wouldn't be surprised to learn of at least a few abandons as a result of that much dust getting in their eyes. What are the odds Magnus goes in the break tomorrow?

@Naustratze2 жыл бұрын
@@mikegeary9231 I don't remember who said it originally, but the Danish commentators quoted it yesterday "The greatest champions don't crash, get punctures, or get sick" (and they then added "or get dirty" since Pogacar's white shirt magically stayed clean most of the race). It's not all about luck, it's also an ability some riders just have. Of course, regarding punctures and crashes, Pogacar's positioning and bike handling abilities play a large part. Mindset probably also plays a role across all three. As for the original comment, Pogacar was always the clear favourite, but Vingegaard has seemed stronger than Roglic for quite some time, so I don't think yesterday's result has changed much in terms of favourite status. On an unrelated note: Bettiol should be removed from the Tour by his team, should he not? His actions were clearly detrimental to the team and he seemed only to care about Pogacar. Very weird to do it so obviously.

Wouldn't surprise me to see Bettiol riding for UAE in the future. Looks like he already received the downpayment. I don't know about Stuyven. Maybe he's still resentful of Van Aert for not telling him in advance that he didnt have the legs at the last year's Worlds? maybe for the points? for the sponsors? Maybe he just like riding on his bike. But it also wouldn't surprise me if he joins UAE eventually by doing the work in advance. I think they both realise that the current UAE team is trash in helping Pog so maybe they can replace them. Don't mind my conspiracy theory, I'm just frustrated at what happened today.

You're saying what I'm thinking. Are UAE buying in-race assistance for Pog? How bizarre is that with both Bettiol and Stuyven being so blatant in helping Pog in ways that defy their own teams? Seriously, it looks corrupt.

There is always the chance of the break playing games and somehow losing 30 seconds in 2km. Stranger things have happened. But yeah, kinda weird that Pogačar receives more help from other teams than his own.

so sick how Pogacar is freelancing every day so far and still only 18 seconds behind. Especially on a critical stage like today. Maybe it was also for the better: if he had a team trying to protect him at the front there would have been more chaos on those narrow roads. Instead he was freelancing with BORA for long stretches of todays stage and it worked out for him to avoid big crashes

Very curious to see how VA and Roglic bodies hold up tomorrow. Wouldn't be surprised if VA would prefer a big bunch to break away so as to take away most points for the green jersey. As he got to be tired and a little bit banged up after today, whilst Jakobson had a relative quiet day.

Fantastic analysis. I'm gonna go listen to the podcast now to see if you go into greater detail on the Bettiol thing - if he hadn't pushed so hard on the cobbles (especially the bit with Pog), would Powless have got yellow? I feel sorry for Rog - a crash that was impossible to avoid, putting his own shoulder back in, and then having to ride for an hour, with a few cobbled sectors thrown in as well. Meanwhile, most of his team were towing his "co-leader" back towards the front after he'd dropped his chain and panicked instead of just fixing it.

Firstly, a big shout out to the lead break group who all worked for each other and kept the calamitous peloton at bay. Poor strategy from some teams, surely being first onto the cobblestones should have been a priority. I've looked on several KZbin and news channels, but there doesn't seem to be any video to show how Wout crashed with his team-mate, only of them getting back up. How did that happen? The hay bale incident is unbelievable, with so many people nearby, not one had the presence of mind to pull it back. They just had their cameras/phones out filming a crash. There's even a policeman there chatting to a spectator looking at the loose bale - nobody makes any attempt to hook it out of the way. The guy that leaned over the verge into the path of an oncoming bike just beggars belief. The intelligence or awareness of these fans is at dangerously low levels in some places - they need to be reigned back, by ropes if necessary! Loose hay bale at edge of racing track, whose stupid idea was that anyway? Have the organisers ever heard of risk assessments? Why did team Jumbo-Visma not join up again after the various incidents? Why was Wout leading the peloton group for a long time once they were dropped by the break groups? How did Sagan drop just going around a lane bend? Some strange stuff happened on this stage. The curse of the cobblestones!

Amazing how Jasper Stuyven acted as a domestique for Pogacar in the crucial closing kms of the stage. Might say that he was after the stage win. Despite not gaining time, still pushed hard with Pogacar on his wheel. TJV not had the best day but showed how great focus on team work and selfless riding can limit losses Who wouldn't want to be in a team like that? Big props to WVA and the rest of the team. Primoz might not be the best bike handler in the world coupled with bad breaks and so you lose time. Hope he can come back with his thermonuclear attacks in the mountaintop finishes.

@@cjkravatz If you have ever raced, you gave it all and you are ahead of a chasing group in the last 5K of a race, you aren't sitting up but you just keep going.
