A group of old men with a passion, and they trust each other. There is no way I would stand at the front of those caterpillar tracks (engine running) with a machine that has just been 'woken up' after almost a lifetime. A top video which takes us back in time.

I was in Germany a few years back and come upon and "Old Tractor Show". The Lanz tractor actually comes with a blow torch and it has a storage compartment for it. The torch is to heat the cylinder head to aid in starting a cold engine. They are 2 cycle and thus can be started backwards. The guy I watched had a backward start after almost reaching TDC going forward, the compression shot the flywheel backward and it fired and continued to run. He had to shut the fuel off and start all over again. I did notice that men are the same the world over...they love to make noise with their tractors and the Land Bulldog was good at that!!

Hi ! After all I've seen the engine turns a little too stubborn. As if it were sticking. The guy over here where I live has a Lanz Bulldog (wheels version) which is essentially of the same time range. And *he* got to start it with pendeling to and fro a couple of times and *then* kicking it the direction he wants to start the engine. That tractor has no reverse gear: you have to brake the motor under idle and then make it turn the other way round. It is a two-stroke and can do that. In addition: the banging noises in the first minutes of runtime are not normal. Something was essentially wrong with the engine or fuel injection point respectively. Nontheless: you did a great job on reviving this machine. It runs on almost any sort of oil. From cheap crud oil to peanuts oil or even old french fries oil - if filtered from crusty stuff. Running it on Diesel fuel makes the engine run a bit faster but also hotter with a shorter but faster expansion stroke. The guy in our town - for snorts and giggles - even ran his tractor on old motor oil, just for the shows. Well ... *that* created a very lot of black smoke. Well done. Keep it going. Old dinosaurs like that need a purpose.

During the war our German Kriegsgefanger took charge of the farm tractors including two Bulldogs. A one-time tankman was in charge and started ours with explosive cartridges. As boys we were enlisted to 'help' by keeping one or the other rolling along while he and his mate went 'behind the hedge'. Getting round the headland with a 14" plough was all the two of us pre-teens could do.
