Over the years I've enjoyed the best available videos about Lao food from some of the most interesting people doing food shows, such as; Mark Wiens, Anthony Bourdain, and Gordon Ramsay. Lao food is still very underrepresented, often mistaken as Thai food, and even though they did a great job promoting the food I felt there was so much missing that I could capture through my language skills and real passion for the food.
I am very excited for the first episode of Lao Home-Cooking with Tanoy, where the goal is for us all to enjoy cooking, some good banter in both languages, and to sit down for a meal together as you would do normally. Hanging out with Lao people cooking and eating is one of my favorite environments to be in and where I learned so much of what I know about the language, culture and way of life.

*This video is not subtitled and we speak a lot of Lao. I will keep improving and always do try my best to translate what's going. Right now I simply don't have the extra hours of time to do subtitles or extra money to hire help, but it's definitely a part of the plan so stick with me because I'm loving doing this and it's just going to get better. :)

"Shredding" works. Chefs would probably call it "julienning". The way she does it with a large knife is to chop and slice to make the long thin pieces. A lot of vendors now use a special tool to make the strips. "Dicing" is cutting into small cubes.

She was "fak"ing that papaya rather skilfully! 🤣 I would describe that as "chopping into strands". When most people hear chop, they think of cutting into small pieces, but with papaya salad you chop lengthwise, then slice underneath where you chopped to separate it into strands. It takes a little practice to get it right. The video looks good. The only suggestion I can make is to add the recipe and/or key vocabulary in the description. In the future, you could bring a notebook with you, and write notes on ingredients and process. Then when you write the description you can just add your notes. That would save you a lot of time. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. 👍

Tell me how you learn Lao? I've been living in Laos for a year, but I still can't figure out what works best for me.
@LaoLegends
@LaoLegends 3 ай бұрын
A lot of hours spent obsessing over trying to figure it out and sounding like a nutter talking to myself. I use the same approach in learning languages. I try to accumulate time exposed to the language in any form then mimic that back to myself out loud. Learning to read and write is also key for my brain to map the language patterns. Feel like literacy is often undervalued, especially for a language like Lao because it's deemed too big of a task, but it really speeds up the learning process.
