You can set desired altitude for ground avoidance, it is not in the manual. It is a dial just in front of the stick, it has marked altitudes , 0, 50, 100, 150, 200... If you set it to zero no alarm will sound if below set altitude, in case if you were wondering what is that sound when you fly low. Other thing is attitude hold function, I think it has no physical button in cockpit but you can map that key to your hotas and it only works after stabilization mode is on, very useful

I humbly suggest you were oscillating because you were going slowly ... maybe SAU would have coped better with a little more throttle. I could be wrong about this but I have had better results approaching just over 400kmh. I find the autolanding harder than manual. I suspect the Mig 21 was designed by a team in a Siberian gulag.... They were the best of what was left of Russian designers after the great purges. Have you tried a SAU commanded landing in heavy fog with a decent through heavy rain clouds ? It is quite challenging .
