FYI Laowa is pronounced as Lau(rhymes with wow)-wa, meaning old frog in Chinese.

After watching all those who showed off the best photos of theirs taken with this lens in their channel and hyping me up, thanks to your video I've realized that I'd turn out to take bad photos with a macro lens due to lack of any experience in macro. Thank you.

Nice review, but I did want to point out that diffraction isn't really an imperfection of a lens, but a physical effect of a small aperture and the wavelength of light. All lenses of with the same absolute aperture size will exhibit exactly the same level of diffraction.

I have the Laowa 60mm 2-1 and it is great but I really wanted a 100mm macro so I bought the canon 100mm L but it is safe to say I will be selling the canon to buy this lens. This is the best macro lens on the market money can buy if you are serious about macro. The fact that it is a 2-1 makes things 10 times easier then having to put extention tubes on a normal 1:1. Thanks for the good review. This was better the Dustin Abbott reviews

Hello..plan on getting a macro lens soon,doing my research..this lens seems to be great,been looking at images on flicker,wow,the detail....BUT,that lens element going back and forth in the lens barrel means to be safe, for dust,etc intrusion into the lens,id definitely be using a filter on the lens barrel opening to protect the internals...Irix 150mm looks good also,but the ability to do 2:1 ratio and 1:1 ratio on this lens(Laowa) is really good for options.

A filter is actually included by the manufacturer, so just screw it on and make this beast dust-proof.

NIce review! I realize that the Sony 90 f/2.8 G OSS has a raft of features over this Laowa (and of course, much price), but how do they compare in terms of pure image sharpness at say, f/8?

You've given this such a glowing review, I am tempted to sell my Sony 90mm macro, get this and have some change left over for another lens. Grate review, Thanks.

Rick Mentore I was looking into buying the Sony lens. Would you say it’s worth the price?

Nice review of this Macro lens! I use it on a Z7, and yes I agree...it is Super-sharp! However, I did notice that the focus "throw" was quite small! In other words, a very small movement of the focus ring moves the focus point a Lot! Thus, it took quite a bit of care/fine movements to achieve optimal focus on the desired point of the subject. Did you find that on your Sony mount version? And regarding your jewelry image, have you tried a focus stacking? (in my product photography, I employ focus stacking, whereby I can shoot at the lens' optimum aperture for sharpness (usually around f/8), and still achieve the required DOF, but simply taking one shot at the closest point of the subject where you want sharp focus, and without moving anything or changing settings, simply focus on a point a bit farther into the subject, and repeat until you've taken a series of shots, with all points of the image in focus. Then, do a focus merge in post-processing, in which software combines all the the images into one, and the result is an image with optimal sharpness from from to back, using the lens' optimal (sharpest) aperture! (Note that this technique only works with non-moving subjects!). Thank you!

How sharp is this lens really? is this lens capable of "transferring" / "handling" all of the 61MP? What would be the max of this lens, how many MP? I usually look up these details on dxomark, but unfortunatly they dont test Laowa lenses for some reason.. When can we expect them to start testing/reviewing this lens?

Thanks for all your great content. I keep going back and forth between this and the Irix 150. You seem to love both from your reviews. Does adapting the Irix tranmit exif data? I like the irix a lot but love the 2x of this one. The irix has the better focus ring throw for fine tuning and possibly the better build and can go to f30 from what you tested. I'm so drawn between these two! Arrgghh!!!

Using the Sigma mc11 with the irix 150mm, it does transmit exif data. I may look into getting the laowa though for size and portability

What about for 24x36mm slides reproductions - and that in front of opaline-glas and flash..? Would flare kill contrast f.ex? vs. Sony 90 (rare..witch could not cropp such a slide behond 1:1) or vs Voightlander 110 or Irix. I must try my Voightlander 65mm for that one day (with tubes or adapted belows) compared to my Zuiko f4 80mm1:1 (with its special tubus) that seemed perfect to me already (on A7r3) :-(

You can use a flash at low power but I found long exposures are better.

In other test the say that Sony 90mm.f.2.8 Macro is shaper and better?

But it doesnt do 2:1
@JessDemant4 жыл бұрын
@@Ade5 its even better because it does 1:1 ;)
@valimaki4 жыл бұрын
@@JessDemant The sony "only" does 1x magnification (1:1), the laowa goes up to 2x magnification (2:1), so it really depens on what you want/need, auto vs manual, 2x vs 1x...

which other tests, unfortunately dxomark hasnt tested any Laowa lenses yet. But no doubt that the Sony lens is sharper, but i would still like to know how sharp this lens is..
