Nice review and great shots. The Flaes tower remains quite photogenetic! Really dig the sunstars of this lens.

nice to see that laowa used quite of few of your images in their marketing. congrats =-) if you have sufficient contact with them, i'd be interested in seeing their 10mm f/4 compared to their zero-d 9mm f/2.8. is it twice as good for twice the price? i'm a sucker for pancake lenses, especially on small bodies, but i've had my eye on the 9mm for a while as i'm really impressed by their distortion control.
@tomscameras2 жыл бұрын
I'm working on it ;) yes and they do have quite a comprehensive lineup with very interesting options! I really like their "Zero-D" approach because I'm just not a fan of heavy digital corrections.
@MarcoAries2 жыл бұрын
It's amazing how they managed to control distortion on such a wide lens!

Yes, I think that was the aspect of this lens that surprized me the most as well!

After watching your video I ordered mine in Canada. I love the compact size and the wide angle. However, I have a lot of difficulties to have a sharp image, hyperfocal distance doesn't work, it is like distance numbers on the ring are wrong. Have you experienced the same?
@tomscameras2 жыл бұрын
Yes, actually you are right! Don’t use those depth-of-field markings on the focus ring for reference! They are far too „optimistic“! This is btw true for about every lens out there, not just Laowa. My guess is that it has to do with the fact that in the old days, people were used to getting very small prints from their photos (like 7x10 cm or 2x3 inches etc.) and these markings on the focus ring were designed for these small output sizes … So if in doubt, please use the digital loupe function or at least focus peaking for precise focus. Even with a 10mm lens! Hope this helps …!

Wow!! You get sunstars already at F5.6!?!? That's crazy!! and the very minimal distortion makes this lens very interesting!
@tomscameras2 жыл бұрын
Yes the sun stars and almost no distinction are the two stand-out features! And that it is so small. But it’s not for you: only APS-C! 😝

(z.B. Foto Gregor / "Kamera Express" in Köln oder Foto Leistenschneider, Düsseldorf usw.)

Great review, Tom! One of my favorite lenses when I shot film was the Voigtlander 15mm. You have me seriously considering this 10mm. Btw, do you know if you can use a UV filter on this lens or will it cause vignetting? Thanks!
@tomscameras Жыл бұрын
I didn't try out filters so I can't answer definitely. But if trying a filter, make sure it's a really slim one!

@tomscameras2 жыл бұрын
Sorry I can’t show raw samples in a KZbin video. I did a quick Google research and yes, you are right: also many blogs where this lens was tested don’t supply RAW samples, maybe due to bandwidth issues. If it helps: all photos in my reviews are shot in RAW and developed in Lightroom. Sharpness is always set to the standard „landscape“ setting (regardless of which lens I shoot, I find that the setting I like the most for almost every camera sensor) and I adjust white balance, contrast and saturation to my liking. But I never apply any correction for vignetting, color fringing or distortion unless explicitly stated in my videos.

very interesting lens and great review!!! I already have the Samyang 12mm, otherwise Id consider this pancake (I dont really need or use the fast apertures very often)
@tomscameras2 жыл бұрын
Yes - there are already so many great lenses out there, it's sometimes hard to justify the purchase of another one! The unique point here is really that combination of ultrawide field-of-view, good quality and super-small dimensions ...

I did not use the 9mm myself. I can only direct you to other reviews like this very comprehensive one by Phillip Reeve: phillipreeve.net/blog/review-laowa-9mm-2-8-aps-c/

@@tomscameras oh ok. I have that lens I just can’t decide if it’s worth the downgrade to get a smaller lease.
@michaellee15002 жыл бұрын
are most of the landscape shot in infinity focus ?
@tomscameras2 жыл бұрын
The lens doesn’t have a hard stop directly at the infinity setting. It can focus a bit past infinity … so when I determined the best focus setting for true infinity, i remembered that setting (it’s like going to the hard stop and then about 2 millimeters back) for all my landscape shots!

No this is for APS-C! But Laowa does make some lenses that are dedicated for Micro Four Thirds as well! Have a look at their website to check them all out: www.venuslens.net
