I bought this lens a few week ago and I am delighted with my purchase. It does flare when shot directly into strong light but a moment to recompose can eliminate or minimise this. The vignette is only really noticeable fully open and can be used artistically. If you don't want the vignette, it is easy to remove in software. I use Affinity and it's a one click fix. All in all one of my better budget photo buys. Thank you for your review I am glad you made me aware of this lens.

The image quality is superb. The sharpness and color make my photos look professional. The autofocus is fast and accurate. I also love the aperture ring - it gives me more control. The little bit of vignetting and swirl gives my photos a nice, artsy feel. It's great for shooting all kinds of scenes.

QC issues aside (I didn’t have any, but still), a pleasant surprise of a lens. Hits the sweet spot for me of small size, good sharpness, and interesting character. Going wide open and hunting for things I can shoot close with backgrounds that will swirl is a lot of fun with this. Or stop down a bit for a sharp normal shot. I hope TTArtisan leans into a similar style with other AF lenses. The flawed optics but character of a vintage lens, with all the modern conveniences. An AF 40mm as swirly as a Helios 44 would be fantastic, and unlike anything else on the market. It’d be an interesting niche for a company.

Yes, I think this is a great everyday lens. Specs are maybe not exciting (as with the Fujinon 27/2.8), but size, weight, sharpness, cost and versatility are its strong points!

I just received it and confirm it works fine with XE1 camera, so far no issues 🙂 UPDATE: At first i thought the lens was "soft" but then found out the problem was the AF is not accurate. Manual focusing i get crisp images, so the optics are fine but AFS is not reliable, i get mostly out of focus pictures. Closing to 5.6 or 8 is less noticeable, but wide open is very obvious. I've tried it with XE1 and XE3 with same results, also lens has the latest firmware. I really wanted this lens to become my everyday lens, but the AF performance in my unit is not reliable 🙁... for MF i would rather keep the TTartisan 23mm 1.4...

Hi Tom, Thanks for your extensive review! I bought this one for the small bit of extra wide angle coverage (40.5mm equivalent versus a 43mm 'normal perspective lens' on 35mm full frame). With it's rumoured bias towards edge sharpness I wasn't disappointed! I really need edge sharpness for my work and can easily fix the distortion and vignetting in the Raw files using a custom LightRoom preset whilst maintaining 95% of the original sharpness, With some final small 'global' clarity and sharpening tweaks I fixed the overall look to the extent that I can even use the lens for my critical studio art reprography work on the new Fuji 40MP sensor! As a final bonus I can turn all my 'manual fixes' off and just enjoy the wonderfull 'swirly bokeh' (rare on any cropped sensor) and other lovely 'flaws' that add so much character to my X-E4 images! BRILLIANT!

Tom, I purchased a Voigtlander Perkeo and hope to receive it tomorrow. I had noticed that you had done a review for the TT Artisan 27/2.8 AF for Fuji X. I have had it on my Fujifilm XE-3 almost non-stop for an entire year. It is my "go to" lens. You have done an excellent job in presenting it. My only shortcoming with it is the autofocus works most, but not all of the time, or is slow when compared to my Fujifilm 23/2 lens. This shortcoming is easy to overcome, and I would recommend it to every Fuji X user as a primary tool with just the right amount of length.

Many thanks for your comment and feedback! I hope you will have a lot of fun with your Perkeo. Apart from the winding mechanism they are fairly simple and straightforward. And yes, the Fujinon 23/2 is a fantastic lens and it offers fast auto focus. Mine arrived a couple of weeks ago. Forget bench testing, in real world use, optically there are very few differences between this lens and my old XF 27mm (pre WR and aperture ring). The differences I notice are:- 1. More vignetting. With the hood attached and shooting RAW. Vignetting is very obvious even at say f5.6. Solution - either remove the hood and the problems go away or shoot JPEG. The hood is not much use anyway as the front element is quite well recessed to start with, and the lens cap has a tendency to fall off the hood. 2. Maybe a bit more prone to flair, but my copy is not that bad to start with. 3. Er.... That's about it. Physically, the TTartisan is a little bit bigger. This is welcome when mounted on my X-T1. The aperture ring is not as nice as Fuji one's are, but it is there and takes very little getting used to. The AF seems pretty decent and a bit quieter than Fuji's. If you are not buying the killer deal of the X-E4 together with the XF 27mm WR, this lens is a no brainer. Massively cheaper than Fuji's offering, with competitive performance. One oddity though. When mine arrived I mounted it on my X-E3 and it would not focus. Tried it on my X-T20 and it worked fine straight away. Worked fine on my X-T1 too. Put it back on the X-E3 and now it works just fine.

Hey Richard, many thanks for your detailed feedback, much appreciated! I think most of what you say is exactly in line with my own findings. I didn't have a noticeable difference though in vignetting between lens hood / no lens hood. I find the vignetting can be distracting at times, even though I'm normally very tolerant to this. It's an easy fix in post if needed, still a little bit less vignetting would be welcome IMO. The autofocus oddity that you experienced is really weird! My copy works well on my X-E4 but I saw a few reports from others who had electronic issues which is why I mentioned it in my video. Let's hope TT Artisan will issue firmware updates when needed.

I got this lens when I ordered my XE4. It got delayed and took an additional 10 days to get. I am currently comparing it to the sigma 56mm 1.4 that I got so I could use the camera . I thought the awkwardness of the aperture ring was me (first time using a fuji). Glad to know it isn't. None of the reviews I saw before ordering mentioned this. All in all, I am happy with the purchase.
@tomscameras2 жыл бұрын
The Sigma is of course a much more "exciting" lens in terms of specs, with 56mm and f/1.4 you can get portraits with a very smooth background blur. If you are okay with a lens without any aperture ring, the Sigma 30/1.4 is also a great option. I very personally really dislike lenses that do not have an aperture ring ... which is the reason I never used the Sigma's on my Fuji. But I know the Sigma's are very good! Especially the X-E4 is pretty awkward to use with a lens without aperture ring as there's only one single command dial, so you have to toggle between adjusting the aperture or the ISO.

I would probably use it on my XE3 or XT30-II. Thanks for the honest review.

AF noise was not an issue at all for me when using the TT Artisan but in all fairness I also didn’t mind it that much when using the XF. Of course there are lenses that are 100% silent and have a faster AF but those all are also bigger and less pocketable … so as a walkaround lens the TT Artisan is a good and inexpensive option, yes!

11:35 so, price aside, you would prefer Fuji's 27mm over this one? And @ 14:28 - is this smaller than the Fuji 27mm f2.8?
@tomscameras2 жыл бұрын
Hi Don. Price aside, I would, in the end, always prefer a Fujinon autofocus lens to any other brand. The main reason simply being that you can 100% rely on a Fujinon lens to work on ANY Fuji X body, past and future. Firmware issues can be ennerving when buying off-brand lenses, no matter how hard they try to make it work. Again, I did not have any issue with this TT Artisan on my X-E4, but there no guarantee that it will work as flawlessly with anyone's cameras. BUT I can't leave the price aside - I find the current Fujinon 27/2.8 just way too expensive for what it is, at least if we're talking normal retail prices. Personally, I just would not get any f/2.8 standard lens for 400ish Euros or Dollars. If you want to buy a Fuji X-E4 and it comes with the lens bundled, and you're paying much less, and you really want the 27/2.8, then go for the Fujinon. If you have to pay 300 ... 400 Dollars or Euros to get one, I'd always also consider more interesting alternatives, such as the Fujinon 23/2 or the 35/1.4, or also Viltrox 33/1.4 (yes I know they're all bigger ... yes I know, the Viltrox is off-brand again.) If you're asking me if I'd prefer the TT Artisan over the first-generation Fujinon 27/2.8, then my very personal answer is YES: The old Fuji 27 doesn't have an aperture ring and I really dislike that a lot. Especially on the X-E4. But, again, if you totally don't mind about aperture rings, and/or you're e.g. shooting an X-S10 or something like that, then the old Fuji 27 is a great alternative ... I said above why!

If you want to go super-cheap, you can choose the Meike 28mm F2.8 pancake-esque prime lens, it does have issues with flare here & there into specific light situations - but otherwise, i've found a few years ago already, it's a really sharp lens, and for that little money...one can't go wrong. No AF, hereby. With the usual focus peaking feature, not a problem after all. The Meike costs usually between ca. 68 to 82 EUR nowadays.
@tomscameras2 жыл бұрын
Hmm, if I would want a manual-focus lens, I'd rather get something like the TT Artisan 25/2 then, one stop faster and easier to use thanks to the clicked aperture (and if you go through the hassle of adjusting, also very easy-to-use infinity setting). The manual focus 25/2 is dirt cheap as well. I admit one of the reasons why I always review TT Artisan lenses is that I find clicked aperture and that hard-stop infinity setting so very important in everyday use. Maybe not everyone agrees with me here, and then other manufacturers like Meike or 7Artisans or also Laowa etc. of course offer great options. I did once compare manual focus with autofocus in my videos: the TT Artisan 35/1.4 vs. the Tokina/Viltrox 33/1.4. I see very valid points for both types of lenses.
@marcp.17522 жыл бұрын
@@tomscameras Hi Tom, first a happy new year 2023! I do own both lenses, both the TTA 25/F2 and Meike 28/F2.8, so it serves a slightly difference purpose, hence for focal length, and lens speed. Both have issues with multicoatings, which could being improved. OTOH, the TTA 35/1.4 is less sharp, less microcontrast vs the 7A 35/1.4, both are into Leica M Mount, and after i've seen Erick's video 1:1 samples comparsion, it was pretty much clear to me, the 7A (7Artisans) is the more sophisticated 35/1.4 lens design, it also comes with an integrated lens hood, whileas the bajonet-mount hood of the TTA 35/1.4 virtually does nothing - reviews showed clearly, that it does flare here & there, wheter the hood is on or not, it doesn't help seriously. What's more about to say about this, the newer 7Artisans 35mm F2 seems to be a winner too, it's smaller than the 35/1.4, and optically even a tad better. 🙂 Nothing against TTArtisan, and i do like my 17/1.4, 50/1.2, 23/1.4 and 25/2 APS-C lenses, but when it comes to M-Mount, 7Artisans is into all reviews the better, sharper lens, means the 28/5.6, 35/1.4 1:1 comparsions...no offense. I am always glad, to see new, affordable lenses - wheter it's TTArtisan, 7Artisans, Youngnuo, or -Viltrox, for example. Viltrox really upped their game to a complete new level - with their release of the XF 75/1.2 PRO AF lens - i really hope for a XF 23/1.2 PRO within this year and 2024. 🙂 I'm waiting for fine produced content into 2023 for this channel - and like to watch your videos here since the beginning.

Hi, I'm new to Fuji. I shoot RAW + JPEG. Is the RAW image always uncorrected or is that a setting? I've never noticed anything like this, but my lenses are perhaps better?
@tomscameras Жыл бұрын
The automatic correction of lens files in RAW is always a bit of a black box. It depends also on the lens manufacturers and also on the specific RAW converter. Normally there will be automatic correction of vignetting, maybe also some tweaking to contrast, saturationand e.g. chromatic aberrations. There are also lenses and cameras where distortion is also automatically corrected but Fuji normally doesn’t do that. (You still have a lens profile available in e.g. Lightroom which will correct distortion as well).
@franciscomeseguergarcia81862 жыл бұрын
Hi Thomas, One question. What about chromatic aberration? That's the missing point in this video, but I think that this lense does a good job for it's price. Thanks for this kind of videos showing to us cheap alternatives for Fuji's system.
@tomscameras2 жыл бұрын
Hi Francisco! You're right, actually! In my testing, chromatic aberration wasn't a big issue at all with this lens. You can see a hint of "false color" at very small branches of trees against the sky if you shoot RAW. In JPG it's all gone, I guess that's because the Fuji's in-camera JPG engine takes care of such small aberrations. Hope this helps!

How does this lens compare (sharpness / contrast), with the 16-50mm kit lens, at the same focal length? Worth having both lenses?
@tomscameras7 ай бұрын
The 27/2.8 is definitely sharper, especially towards the borders and corners. Contrast is good on both these lenses. If you value to have a super-small lens from time to time, that is even smaller than the 16-50 kit zoom, yes then it's worth having both. In my opinion, though, I would want a faster lens as a second lens next to the kit zoom ... for example an f/1.8 lens or something like that!
@thejacksons30197 ай бұрын
Thanks Tom. Just bought. Main reason is being compact for pocketability and inexpensive for an autofocus Fuji-fit lens. Don’t take many indoor photos so f2.8, stopped down where necessary, is hopefully ok for outdoor photography.

Hi Tom - how would you compare this against the 25mm f/2 in terms of image quality? Btw, I had the Fuji 27mm f/2.8 but never liked it (thought it lacked any character and it felt like a toy). Thanks!
@tomscameras Жыл бұрын
The 27/2.8 is definitely sharper at f/2.8 towards the borders and corners, the 25/2 needs to be stopped down a bit more to show even sharpness all across the frame. The vignetting of the 27/2.8 is stronger. If you're looking for more character and like to play a bit with bokeh / unsharp backgrounds, the 25/2 is of course the more interesting lens out of the two. The 27/2.8 however, like its Fuji counterpart, is designed to be the most compact, pancake-style lens with the added benefit of auto focus.

Hi Ben! The only real advantage of the new TT Artisan is that it offers an aperture ring. If you’re happy with a lens without aperture ring, get the Fujinon.
@toxotis70 Жыл бұрын
I find it 200 euros in Greece, almost the same price as a used Fuji 27mm…what lens would you buy ?
@tomscameras Жыл бұрын
If you value the dedicated aperture ring, then the TT Artisan. If that doesn't matter to you, go for the used Fujinon (but of course when buying used, always make sure it is in good working condition).

Hi Tom, just wondering does the camera correct for the vignette if you shoot in jpeg? If not what do you need to stop down to so the vignette is not noticeable? Also if you use a proper lens hood, not the silly one they supply with the lens will this help with straylight/flaring?
@tomscameras Жыл бұрын
I included some JPG out of cam files, so the answer is no, it won't really automatically correct for vignetting, at least not on the X-E4. Sorry, I didn't try the lens with another lens hood.
@neilmontgomery3470 Жыл бұрын
@@tomscameras Thanks for replying Tom. You can remove the vignette quite easily with software and it can be useful with portraiture when stopped down, so not really a deal breaker. I think I might buy a third party lens hood as the one that comes with the camera seems pretty useless.

@@tomscameras Would the 25mm f2 be better for that on JPG?
@tomscameras2 ай бұрын
@@masstone3045 Actually, vignetting is less pronounced in the manual focus 25/2, yes. (Even though the 25/2 as a manual lens of course also doesn't have any built-in digital corrections as AF lenses ... but the lens design itself seems to be less prone to vignetting.)

Hi Thomas, wie ist die Schärfe im Vergleich zu dem Fuji 18 - 55 mm F 2.8 - 4.0. Hast du diesbezüglich Erfahrungswerte? VG
@tomscameras2 жыл бұрын

Does the lens hood actually do anything?
@tomscameras3 ай бұрын
I like it. This style of lens hood can be basically as effective as a typical petal-type one. Because it’s so small, you’ll most likely keep it on the lens all the time and then it also provides some physical protection against scratches on the front lens surface.

All's you have to do is replace that POS little lens "hood"with a real hood and the flare magically disappears ! As long as you don't shoot directly into sun. I just wish it was metal, not plastic ! Also , they really should include proper hoods and snap caps with all lenses and I'll gladly pay more ! I love the zebra lenses and I wish they would make all their lenses zebra's/ black and that all had electronic connections more for the data transfer than auto focusing. I got this lens because I got it used for a great price and I must admit I really like it for street photography. But I also wish it was faster ! I mean why not beat Fuji with a 1.4 at least ? They need to start pushing for higher quality and to top what Fuji has offered now that we know that they can make quality lenses ! And maybe some of their lenses made only for Leica could be shared too !!! LarryMac

I get that they started with this pancake style lens and "only" f/2.8 because maybe that's easier to build, given that TT Artisan is pretty new to designing AF lenses. But you are totally right: Now that they've proven that they can do AF, they should also go for f/1.4 lenses in the future :)

It depends, if you need a ~41mm (27x1.52 APS-C cropfactor) prime lens. Many reviews said, at F/4 it's much sharper, better useable than on F/2.8 aperture.
@tomscameras2 жыл бұрын
Maybe I'm lucky then? My copy is super sharp at f/2.8 already. Absolutely no complaints there! Only the vignetting can be distracting at f/2.8 as you see in my sample shots ...

@@tomscameras Maybe Tom. Since you've got it directly via TTA, it seems to be a hand picked copy - no offense. I've seen so far all reviews via YT, also the Fujirumors Minireview, which was the #1 on YT weeks ago. :)

That’s the problem with all these autofocus lenses: they’re much more complex inside and also use more plastic parts. So there’s more sample-to-sample variation. Many manufacturers have sorted out these issues today because they do autofocus lenses for decades… I think if my lens performs so good in sharpness, the lens design must be pretty good in sharpness. It also corresponds with the MTF curves that have been published. But yes, I can’t say anything about possible sample-to-sample variations.

Thanks for your honest opinion! Of course, I disagree - I really put all my effort into showing you not only the strengths, but also the weaknesses of this lens, and I back it up with a lot of sample photos. There's one thing though that I should have pointed out in my video more clearly. Also see the comment of Marc P. further below in the comment section: There might be sample-to-sample variation, because mass-production of autofocus lenses is no easy task, especially at this price point. I can obviously only talk about the performance of this one copy of the lens, and yes, it's a sample that I got directly from the manufacturer!

In what way is this sponsored? TTArtisan provided him a $160 lens that he spent hours filming and editing for a review. The reviewer definitely has far better lenses that he would use in outside of a review, so having this additional lens doesn’t provide much value after the review is finished. Also, the review wasn’t too positive. It was basically “this lens if good if you need something at this budget, and stick to JPEG’s. If you shoot raw or want better decent performance the Fujinon is better”.

Thanks to that we as viewers get access to more tests and information. As always you have to process and evaluate the presented information yourself and assess pros and cons with regard to your own photography. I think Tom does a very good job and he is not silent about drawbacks or less good performances of tested gear.
