Enjoyed the review. Laphroaig was my introduction to Islay scotches. Before then, I tried scotch. I had tasted the usual suspects, Chivas, Johnny Walker, Macallan, Dewar's, etc. None of those agreed with me at. all. I thought just didn't have a taste for scotch. Fast forward many years, and I found myself playing in a pipe and drum band. One night after a particularly strenuous day of performances, my band mates were gathered in one hotel room - swapping stories, sharing lamentations, and drinking Laphroaig. I could immediately smell it upon entering the room. It was such a warm and familiar scent. I was offered a glass, and I was immediately certain that I loved this scotch. Some 13 years later, I still love it.

I was given a bottle of Laphroaig as a gift about 15 years ago. I hated it. But since I was raised in the "people are starving in China" era, I couldn't just dump it down the drain. So I kept drinking it. By the time that I emptied the bottle, I was converted and went out and got another. I've been a Laphroaig fan ever since. Another piece of my story is that when I was young, my father would buy bags of "peat moss" every year to put on the garden. So every time I have a dram, it takes me back to my youth.

Sounds like you have quite a selection for someone early in their whisky journey!! I might suggest adding a Talisker 10, or Talisker Storm to your collection. From what you've described, it might not be as smokey as you like (not nearly as smokey as Laphroaig, or most other Islays), but it certainly does have a peat/smokey flavor, and might be a good way to introduce friends into the world of smokey Scotches! Cheers!!

I was expecting that serious Peat from hell that everyone talks about unfortunately I'm disappointed it's not as peaty as Aredbeg 10 year. Though I enjoy this scotch I can't justify the $70 I spent for it. As for the notes that I pick up Earth tobacco oak cedar pepper salt saltwater Peat smoke and something medicinal like an antiseptic and a little bit of moss and charcoal.

I'm not a fan of smokey woody whisky. I much prefer sweet dessert style whisky that's smooth and sippable. Got given a bottle of this for my Birthday and didn't know what to expect. Upon smelling it I initially thought - this is EXACTLY what I don't like in whisky. 'Smells like swamp' was my thoughts. Then I tasted it and was blown away. Tastes nothing like what it smells like. So smooth and moreish, so many layers to it and the more I sipped it the more I liked it. Fantastic whisky.

Bill, you say "Not every single malt scotch now is what it used to be, it used to be that you would kinda sell or trade your product... and this was the way of most single malt scotches...." (1:30). You are confusing SINGLE Malt Scotch with BLENDED Malt Scotch or just BLENDED SCOTCH Whiskies. A SINGLE MALT by definition is from just one distillery. The "Single" refers to the quantity of distilleries involved. It is true that SINGLE MALTS were not as common as they are today but that was because the malt was mostly used in BLENDED Scotch whiskies. In fact, that is still true today as about 90% of all Scotch Whisky (such as Johnny Walker) is BLENDED Scotch Whisky and only a portion of the spirit is from malted barley.
@tjblanchard4 жыл бұрын

Yup I have a first time drinking Laphroaig story! My next door neighbor's brother. Recently we had a little BBQ party and being both spirit lovers I bought over a Glenlivet 12 to share with my neighbor after the meal. His brother was also there and when he saw the bottle he gleefully joins us to share it, and THEN puts a bottle of Laphroaig 10 on the table and said to me, "You're going to try this!!!" The neighbors were laughing knowing what was going to happen, and low and behold I first smelled and sipped it and while still in shock said "OMG what the hell is this!!!!?" Laughing harder he said "Keep sipping it and tell me what you taste AFTER the smoke!" And then it happened- the undertones of the salty sea, brine, oak casks and wood fire appeared. I gradually "got it" after a couple more drinks and couldn't stop thinking about how different the Islay Scotches are from vs. the Speysides and Bourbons I've been accustomed to. Laphroaig 10's a great savory dram with BBQ, cheeses and crackers. Wow. Buying my own first bottle of Laphroaig 10 and can't wait to return the favor by hooking somebody else in with it!😀🥃
