No Nonsense Whisky

Күн бұрын

Laphroaig are the best selling distillery on Islay and one of the top ten best selling scotch single malt producers in the world. Although a few of the age statements have disappeared from the shelves of late, the Laphroaig 10 year old has stood the test of time and is one ofthe truely iconic Islay single malts.
For those familiar with Islays' distinct profile, this needs no explaination at all. But for those not so familiar with it, this is deep dark smoke. Not the strongest around, but its burnt rather than fresh smokey. Grassy and medicinal, this dram is not for everyone and certain not an Islay whisky for beginners.

I bought my first bottle of Laphroaig after a Dick Francis novel, tasted it and left it on the shelf. I later fell for the flu. In desperation I resorted to the Laphroaig for some sort of consolation. It at first felt 'medicinal'. I quickly became 'accustomed' to it and by the end of the 3/4 bottle it was my life-long friend. I have loved it ever since. Possibly an acquired taste, it is the king of whiskies ever since and only its price dictates that I only enjoy it occasionally from time to time. Long live Islay whiskies. Long live Laphroaig Best wishes to Islay from Paul in the UK Midlands. (A friend of Laphroaig)

My whishky journey started with Laphroaig 10. Since then I have hardly cared about other Scotches, Bourbon or Irish whiskeys. Love the peaty smoke of this single malt!! Just drip, stir, sip, savor and let the island of Islay show in your lowball glass.....Slàinte mhath folks!!

This was my first Scotch. It was fantastic, so smooth but yet so smoky. There is a definite sweetness hidden in there as well as a bit of vanilla and anise. Really through smooth, sweet smoke is the best way to describe it.

funny upon watching the whiskey vault (dan and rex out of austin tx on youtube that got me hooked to try whiskey) they said the same thing: sure for most people, esp beginners into scotch the approach is baby steps, 'easy as she goes' but for some (minority no doubt) it was the peated stuff that finally made them stand up and want to explore further....for me it's highland park 12 for now.

Great description of the character of its smokiness (of a dead fire not a live one), well done! That character mixed with the seaweed is why it’s my current favorite, i feel it’s responsible for that lingering umami finish with a hint of salt that is just so satisfying.

When I first started drinking scotch, I did not like Islay whisky at all. My gateway Islay was Caol Ila 18. Since then, I've grown to love all that smoke and always have a bottle of Laphroaig 10 in the house. I enjoy your channel. keep up the good work.

I began my scotch journey with Glenlivet. Visiting a friend, he offered me a "new" whisky (Laphroaig 10). I damn near choked on the first swallow! It was like drinking the smoke from a wet fire. Since I was at his house, the polite action was to finish the drink. He offered a second and it was nice. He offered a third and I was hooked! Laphroaig 10 is my whisky and it is the nectar of the gods!!

Tried Highland Park 12 about a year ago and found the smoke in that a bit challenging as for me whilst its not intense it is quite spikey and has a TCP quality. Made my way around some higher strength bourbons for about a year which got me used to punchier flavours. Then tried Lagavulin 16 which was super smokey in flavour but - to my delight - not at all difficult. Since then have been able to enjoy Laphroig 10 and Ardbeg 10 from the first glass and found them much less smokey than I was expecting which has been a real pleasure. So yeah, my recommendation if if anyone is struggling with peat is try some cheek smacking high proof american whiskies then use Lagavulin as your way in. Looking forward to going back to Highland Park to see if I like it now. Great vid, thanks.

I was brought up in a pub by My mother and step father from the age of 6 to 20. And the only two whiskeys we sold for ages were Bells and Famous Grouse, as did all the other pubs in the village ( Rhosllanerchrugog in Wales )....obviously looking back it stuns me that anyone would drink Bells...It's like having your throat bathed in acid..lol. But plenty of people did. When I started doing a bit of underage drinking with friends, we tended to drink Jack and Coke after too many pints! However my Mam and Step dad used to go to trade shows , and I remember them buying some really nice whiskeys set out in a decent display. I remember the Laphroaig bottle because the canisters were underneath the bottles, and it's a very distinctive canister in my mind. Nobody in the village were willing to spend a little extra cash to try the nice whiskeys....so over time my parents drunk them, which they enjoyed, but the object was obviously to turn people on to better and more expensive whisky. The people in the village only really cared about getting pissed for the least amount of money though. There used to be about twelve pubs here, now there are two. The breweries were asking too much rent, and people started going to places like Weatherspoons which we couldn't compete on price with. As for Peated Whisky , Talisker Sky was a revalation to me, but now having tried Laphroaig I have to say It'a very special. My friend can't stand it, but like you say it's a divider of opinions, I just love the intense smoke. My bottle is 40% did you say your's was stronger? I'd love to try a stronger version.

Laphroaig was my father's regular drink, and so it was the first Scotch I ever tasted. After that baptism, every other Scotch (at first) seemed as an anticlimax. Forty-five years after my first ever dram, I still require some smokiness in a drink, but I've learned to appreciate whiskies with less smokiness than Islay! Laphroaig is still a lovely drink, but not quite what it was when I first knew it.

I'm drinking it right now for the first time. This is not a whisky for novices, that's for sure. I think I can feel my chest hair growing as I sip on it. I don't get the seaweed on the nose. The smoke ain't as bad as, say, a Talisker that is basically campfire smoke in a bottle. It is very medicinal though. Not very sweet, not at all. Very spicy however! The palate is super medicinal and the aftertaste is definitely just a wooden medicine cabinet that was used as fire wood and put out with rain from the seashore... Not necessarily the kind of scotch I usually like, but definitely an experience!

Added color is for consistancy. Main selling point. In a green bottle that's in a sleeve i don't think its colored at all. Also due to the intense robust flavors it's hard to believe its chill filtered either. If it is colored they have to put that on the bottle. Same if its chill filtered.

I'm working through my first bottle of this. Absolutely hated it at first. Smells and tastes like a tire store. After a few glasses though, I've started to appreciate the unique flavor profile and how smooth of a drink it really is. You will either love or hate this whiskey, so I'd recommend newcomers stay away from this whiskey unless you are willing to take a risk with your money for a unique flavor profile hard to find elsewhere.

I love it precisely because it tastes like burned wood, like a dead bonfire with grassy and medicinal notes. My introduction into Islays (and Scotch!) was a flight which i rank as Laphroaig 10 > Bunnahabhain 12 > Caol Ila 12 > Bowmore 12 > Lagavulin 16 > Ardberg 10. Laga was too harsh for me while Ardberg way too spicy and peppery.

One of the first whiskies I bought was a Talisker Skye, it just tasted like a house fire, So since then I've had a Ardmore Legacy, a Penderyn peated and thought I want a more peaty, just bought a 50ml Laphroaig 10, hmmmm, couldn't drink it all night but I think its ok, what would be slightly less intense but still up there?

Have no fear, I make all my tasting notes ahead of time using proper glassware. This is actually an old video when I thought using a rocks glass would give me a more relaxed look. But I've been using a glencairn for quite some time. Ps i would also argue that the glassware makes no difference to an experienced nose, but that's my opinion

I should have watched this review first. Just purchased a bottle a couple weeks ago as my introduction to Islay and I do not like it. I love the smoke from Johnnie Walker black and double black but this one is crazy. Call it "peat" all you want, it tastes and smells like cigarettes and my wife would not come near me. You do not need a fancy glass for the nose because it smells up the room. Maybe I'll get use to it as I drink it more but I am saving this bottle to share with friends when they come over. I wish I had tried it first before buying it so I'll extend the favor to others. Glad so many others like it but apparently I am not an Islay guy at the moment.
@NoNonsenseWhisky

I'm with you there. Not a beginners peat for sure. It took me years to build up to enjoying this. You wanted to drink things like Ardmore Legacy or Highland Park 12 and get a taste for really low peat levels. Then maybe a softer Islay. Lagavulin 16, or Caol Ila 12 should see you right
@TacticalCanner

Here in Ontario, QC is up to $82 while the Laph 10 is $86. I refuse to buy NAS scotch because the distillers are throwing a bunch of double-talk at us. According to them, age doesn't matter, so they can charge a lot for NAS whisky......but age matters, so anything older than 18 years costs more than a mortgage payment.
