In this video I drill a quartz point, braid it, and bead it I chat a bit about how hard it is to drill quartz , how affordable quartz points can be , and where I buy quartz points for about 20$ a kilo

Beautiful work. What bit do you reccomend for drilling holes in agate for jewelry pieces. Earings and necklaces specifically. With so many shapes it gets confusing with which one will make good fast work of it.
@lapidarydave5 жыл бұрын
When it comes to earnings 1mm is usually the best hole for the findings which is extremely difficult to drill even with fancy bits and drilling tools like I use in this video , it's not impossible and companies like Gunther drilling systems do sell 1mm bits but the are extremely fragile and difficult to drill successfully, when it comes to agates and hard materials like it in prefer to use my water swivel which is what I use in this video but it can be done with a dremel which would be good for necklaces but not in 1mm like you might need for earnings

I'm looking for a drill and bits to drill semi-precious stones. Can you describe the water feeding system you have on your drill, where to get one, and where you purchase your bits? For those who are wanting to get started, that would be very helpful. I've watched several videos here, and your setup looks to be the most efficient and effective.

Dave great video, I noticed you refer to the artificial sinew as cotton sinew in several of your videos. Can you please make a video of how you thread the cordage through the hole, tie it, and braid it ? I'm very near completion of the Jade lattes I'm attempting to make and would love to incorporate that cordage into them. Oh where to find that cordage as well if possible. Thanks for all you do brother.

Are you able to use a regular drill press with a small bit even if you don't have the water? And if you can what size drill should I use?
@lapidarydave4 жыл бұрын
Jude2x you could use a drill press but you will want to use water not only to keep the stone from cracking but also to keep your diamond drill bit from burning up and losing its diamond grill You have to drill stone with diamond bits because steel drill bits won’t drill stone I suggest Johnson brothers 80grit diamond drill bits :) they are very affordable and are good quality for the price

@lapidarydave3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately it’s pretty tough to polish Crystal points without compromising their natural shape you could tumble them and you might lose a lot of material on the beam is shaping a lot or you could flat lab them which will make them a lot shinier but could lose a lot of the natural organic look to the formation of the Crystal

You can get crystals like the when's I have in this video from almost anywhere that sells gems and minerals, eBay is a good place to buy smaller quartz crystals like the ones I'm using in this video also you are a local Gem and mineral and Crystal stores will have them even though probably be a little bit more expensive than getting them offline, gem shows everywhere also sell crystals

If I may ask another question what RPMs are you drilling on? And what is a good RPM to drill on for crystals thank you very much.
@lapidarydave5 жыл бұрын
Cedra Propp I believe I have my drill press set to the middle speed on my cheap 9”skill press (sorry I don’t know the exact rpm) I don’t know from experience but I can’t imagine there being troubles with the swivel spinning too slow or too fast especially to fast

Hey Dave, just wondering what diameter of drill bit you use? Also what type of big do you use? Thanks!
@lapidarydave5 жыл бұрын
In this video I think I'm drilling with a 2.5mm bit and if you mean drill when you say "big" I use a cheap SKIL brand drill press , I used the cheap harbor freight drill press before this one but I was having some micro adjustment issues so I bought the slightly better Skil press I totally suggest using a straight and true drill press when drilling with the Gunther drilling system the better the drill press the better it'll work :)
@judeebee50723 жыл бұрын
@@lapidarydave I have the Harbor Freight drill press and boy does it shake when drilling. Yours looked like it stayed fairly still during the drilling process. Do you know which SKIL model you have and how bad is the shake on it? Thanks for all the info, btw. My shopping list is growing.
@lapidarydave3 жыл бұрын
@@judeebee5072 howdy there I’m using the 10 inch drill press which works a lot smoother then my old 9 inch harbor freight drill press In my opinion harbor freight drill presses are hit and miss big time and are not all made with the same quality control I’d say the skil is definitely worth the money

Lapidary Dave is there any other Drill press that would still be good for drilling through Quartz and other stones? What would I need to get?
@lapidarydave4 жыл бұрын
So you can use almost any drill press the Gunther drilling system I have is actually just a truck that fits inside of the truck of a drill press so it can be used another drill presses but when it comes to any alternatives to the tool itself the actual Gunther drilling system is what they call a water swivel and water swivels can be had very affordably being sold by different companies online I have yet to buy one myself I know Highland Park lapidary makes one and I know that they are a lot more affordable than the Gunther stuff when it comes to the quality of drilling it’s less important about the actual water swivel then it is about the drillbits you’re using I think a Gunther drilling system works so well because the drill bits are extremely high-quality in fact the cheapest drillbits they make about $45 if you don’t need an extremely precise hole you can do it by hand I often drill courts by hand it could be very easy I have a few videos on that and which I use a Dremel and a rotary tool

@lapidarydave5 жыл бұрын
Cedra Propp They are very cheap Johnson brothers brand burrs ,They are sold by the shank size and not by mm the pack I use are 1/8 and 80grit ,Grits more aggressive than 80 can be distractive to the stone and grits finer than 80 are too fine to drill in a reasonable amount of time

No apologies needed, all is well I just thank you for taking the time to help me! I have broken two Gunther drill bits, we decided to go forward with the drilling system. I love how the drill bits work they're quick, efficient but I'm new at this. I first started with a hand-held Dremel tool and I drilled out a couple of stones to for myself into for my husband however that was very time-consuming. We decided to purchase a drill press and as I did more research I was led to your Channel :-) I have so many beautiful crystals around and I do a lot of beating with wooden beads and I'm looking forward to drilling crystals to add to my bead collection and perhaps starting a website! I know it will take some time to develop a finesse so I'm really looking forward to the journey :-)
