This works some of the time for some folks. But if your laptop is 2 - 3 years old and this "not charging" effect crops up then it probably is because your battery needs replaced. Also - big point - DO NOT KEEP YOUR LAPTOP PLUGGED IN 24/7!!! You should charge it once, unplug and and allow this to drain down to < 10 %. This will mean you may have to recharge your unit 3 - 5x per week but I promise you it will add months or even years to the longevity of your battery!
@majorgnu8 жыл бұрын
That's outdated information based on old battery technology (NiCd) that's been out of use in laptops, cellphones and most power-hungry mobile electronics for many years. Look up the best practices for Lithium ion and Lithium polymer batteries. You'll see that leaving devices plugged in is not a problem by itself and that full discharge cycles are harmful. The two big rules for Li-ion and Li-po are: keep batteries from getting too hot and avoid full discharges.

is there any explanation as to why? im thinking that is is because the drivers keep track of the batteries capacity and will not charge a "tired" pack, so uninstalling them would get rid of the "logs" so it doesnt remember that that is a tired pack, also what does charging and discharging the pack do for it? i would really like to know why this happens, thanks for sharing!

It seems to happen to a lot of different Laptops (Acer, Dell, HP, Toshiba, etc.) but the one thing they have in common is the Windows OS, (Windows 10, 8.1, 7, XP) so I'm guessing it's yet another piece of dodgy Microsoft coding.

this problem is caused by a bug in the Microsoft ACPI drivers, and no fix has been applied yet by Microsoft because as they have said "its not a significant problem that causes issues with performance", i've done this same thing on my dell 14z about a dozen times now, and really you dont have to disconnect and restart then reconnect and restart, you can go into the devmgmt.msc control console, uninstall acpi compliant devices/composite battery, wait a few seconds, then do a scan for hardware changes, it'll re-detect the devices, once they install, disconnect the ac adapter for about a minute, then reconnect, and windows should show "plugged in, charging", i just wish microsoft would fix this known problem with windows already

@jeeper4269 жыл бұрын
Thomas Evolve i haven't yet the problem i have is i only use my laptop majority of the time at work and occasionally when mobile, but i've found that the problem reoccurs when restarting the computer (from off not just rebooting windows from start->restart or from command prompt with shutdown -r -f options and i keep having to re-apply the little band-aid which annoys the crap out of me, i hope Microsoft fixes this problem soon tbh, and i'm glad the fixes helped you out

Im still working on it,i only use my laptop (almost 6 years old) and its plugged in 24/7 at home.I started with 73% and now its up to 97% charged.I have charged and drained the battery twice now,will see it goes up to 100% after third charge.
Thank you! This worked for my Toshiba laptop, core i7, windows 8--about a 3 year old computer. I know that it worked because as soon as I uplugged the AC, the computer stayed on. Before, when I removed it from the AC power supply, it just died. The battery wouldn't take over.

If you have a newer laptop that uses Li-Ion/Li-Fe/Li-Po batteries, do NOT fully discharge it, that's bad for the batteries.
@majorgnu8 жыл бұрын
And by "newer" you mean "it doesn't belong in a museum." That advice has been outdated for a long time now. I can't remember the last time I saw a laptop or cellphone that used NiCd batteries.
@amormarzan48738 жыл бұрын
Major Gnuisance i wish you luck in your belief. That reminder does not only apply to NiCd. All batteries have a lower cutoff voltage. if you fully discharge it and leave it there for enough time, it will naturally self discharge to lower than the cutoff voltage and if left unnoticed, will kill the battery.

@r4microds10 жыл бұрын
If this is your case, chances are your issue is hardware related. This sometimes happens (most commonly in DELL laptops). The AC adapter has an ID pin that tells the laptop that the charger is offical from the manufacturer. You can still turn on the laptop using the charger, but it will refuse to charge the battery if the pin is broken. You can try twisting the end that goes into your laptop a little. Sometimes this works. Otherwise you will most likely need to replace the AC adapter (charger) for your laptop. If possible, try someone elses charger or maybe go to a tech store because if it still wont work with their charger, its likely that the hardware fault is actully on your laptop's mobo instead of your charger. In this case, you most likely will need to get a new laptop unless you're good at soldiering and fixing circuits. lol Either that, or continue to endure no charge. If your battery is the same as someone else you know that can actually charge theirs, just keep swapping batteries.
@crackerworld10 жыл бұрын

Thanks for your help. This fix worked 1st time on my very troublesome Samsung laptop. I’ll be looking out for more of your videos.

Nope. Didn't work. Better head back to the drawing board. Not so sure this guys laptop that he was using to demo his tip had a battery charging issue. At the beginning of the video we never see him show us that his battery is not charging. At the end he shows us that his tip "worked." I'll give it a try but not very convincing.

sambking he never uninstalled the acpi controllers. so I assume his was working just fine for purposes of uploading this video

Hasn't worked for me. Still stuck at 80% plugged in not charging.
@Jtaylor18 жыл бұрын
it might be a bad battery. I have a Dell Latitude D620 and it's currently showing 23% remaining it thinks that it's charging but it's not.

max miser I had to take the battery out and then put it back for mine to work
@Jordy-cq5pz6 жыл бұрын
if you can charge up to 80 and it just stops there, it is most likely the bios, you can change this in the bios, it is best you have it on if you want to have the battery in your laptop longer. it saves your battery from exploding if it gets overcharged and it gets weeker every time you charge it up 100%

I did this yesterday on my Dell E6420 - and it worked great! It had been stuck at 10%, not charging and I've now been through 2 complete charge/discharge cycles, with the 3rd to complete this morning (as suggested).
@BenjaminEsposti8 жыл бұрын
Mine is weird, sometimes it will only charge up to about 80%, then say "plugged-in, not charging" ... other times, it will charge to 100%. It seems like it might have a flaky cell.

Same thing is happening with my battery. It's brand new and isn't charging.
@maryellenjones53439 жыл бұрын
francois grenier Ditto here. I installed a brand new, "genuine Dell" battery, identical to my original (which still works but is weakening). Laptop suddenly complains it's "not a genuine Dell" after 3 months of perfect performance. Message also says "battery 84%, plugged in, not charging." If I unplug, laptop dies sudden death (not shut-down),

Mary Jones i solved my problem...it was the charge cable that sucked.

I found mine would constantly say plugged in not charging. I powered off my device. Disconnect power plug. Removed battery. Pressed the power button about 5 to 10 times. Then reinstalled the battery and connected power. Wait a few minutes and turn on laptop. It works for me everytime.

Need to use an old Lenovo U350 laptop which already has a replacement battery and has never worked or charged properly so always had to be plugged into the mains. However just done as per the video and now works perfectly on battery only. Thank you.
