Larry, thank you for the video. I've been watching for probably half a year now and just brewed the Largaarden last Friday. The brew went flawless. After a day and a half, I had an extremely aggressive fermentation and had to have an overflow hose for my carboy since the crousen was going crazy. Looking forward to bottling in another week and trying it that week after. Thanks again for your inspiration. You really make it easy for the home brewer with your detailed videos and AWESOME spreadsheets!

@dimitri60006 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and from my experience, it's pretty challenging to do a proper step mash with a propane burner. I did it twice using a good amount of flaked oats for an IPA but the temperatures can vary and I once overshot the saccharification rest temp range I was looking for after the beta rest. But I think it's definitely worth trying out! I noticed more of the creamy mouthfeel in both batches.

I did this recipe about 8 days ago, except my homebrew shop didn't have the yeast so I used a dry, I think it was WB-06. Fun first all-grain brew day. I thought I was in trouble right at the first vorlauf, but it was nothing a long toothpick couldn't fix. I also forgot to take any gravity readings whatsoever. Can't wait to taste this thing. I have noticed that it kind of looks like the cloudiness is starting to drop out in the fermenter (I moved it into a secondary yesterday). One thing I can say for sure is that there's no chance this one is going to taste the same as all of my extract pale ales and IPA's. I was getting a little bored of having everything come out practically the same.

When you say "it is not a Belgian Witbier style beer, you're making something else" at 4:25, keep in mind that Belgian styles are quite loose and not very restricting, so there's nothing wrong doing it, it would just be your own interpretation of the style. In the USA Blue Moon makes it, and in Belgium, I come to think to "La Botteresse" but I'm sure there are other. By the way, what we understand now as Witbier is basicly a clone the Hoegaarden by Pierre Celis (and later ABInbev), the original style was quite different, notably slightly sour due to mix fermentations in open vessels.
@andrewbrumana32264 жыл бұрын
I just brewed this yesterday. (My 2nd all-grain batch!) It's in the fermenter, bubbling away! Two questions: 1) Since it's a witbier, I'm assuming there's no secondary? 2) Regarding priming - If I'm reading your spreadsheet correctly, you're shooting for 2.45 volumes of CO(2), is this correct?
