Arguably, the greatest live performance in recorded musical history and the single greatest song from that evening. I saw her live in 2018 at the Warner Theater in Washington DC, and 20 years later, she had lost nothing! I do have to disagree with you on one point. I do not believe there was any "risk" in her performance. For me, risk implies the potential to fail at the task at hand. She is supremely confident in what she is capable of. If you listen to her in 2022, you can hear some changes in the notes she chooses, but again...no risk. For me, anyway, the greatest singer-storyteller in history.

“Je suis Malade” was written by famous French singer & songwriter Serge Lama together with composer/singer Alice Dona in 1973. This is based on his own experience and he was the original performer, hence some lyrics are a bit male-oriented (eg my mother leaves me, whiskies, I pour my blood in your body, …). When Serge Lama had a dinner with Alice Dona and told her about his obsessive love that was leading to a road block, she came back home and compose the music in a couple of hours. The morning after, she presented him the music and he wrote the lyrics in … 20 minutes. Serge Lama was the original performer in 1973, it started to be promoted on the radio, and the song was brought to fame only when, a few months after, Dalida covered it. She was an absolute mega star in France, another emotional powerhouse, and this song resonated very much with her own feelings. Her success with this song transformed it into a french classic, and started to make it famous abroad. But it is Lara Fabian that really made this song a very popular song in many countries with her cover in the mid 90s. At that time Dalida had already passed away, but Serge Lama was (and is) still alive. Dalida and Serge were two inspirations for Lara, so she sent an audio copy to Serge of her version. She was unknown at that time in France but he was so impressed with her vocal skills and her emotions rendering that he invited her in France to sing it as a duet. They became good friends. Lara has made some subtle changes to the song that gave it even more power and Serge Lama adopted these in his later interpretations. The 1999 version ("From Lara with Love" Concert in Montreal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3m2qp5qiKynq7s is legendary internationally and has attracted many artists to do a cover, even from non french-speaking countries. The most recent ones I am aware of are from italian singer Giulia Falcone, from the korean singer Choi Sung Hoon or from the korean band Forestella.

sadness, disappointment, anger, despair, those are the emotions in that song. and Lara manages to live up to that emotion, so we can feel it. This performance was ranked in a blog I saw recently as one of the three greatest singing performances EVER in television history -- she accomplished this using all the techniques you referred to so eloquently but in addition she exhibits a quality unique to her alone ............. Lara LIVES the story she is singing and invites her audience to join along with her into the journey of the piece. She is, to me anyway, the Ultimate Artist

As you watch you at the start you can see she's literally being transported into the song & is living every word she sings.... Then at the end when the audience is cheering you actually see her re-enter her body & come back slightly shocked realizing oh right I'm not alone here then the moment in the song where the lyrics speak of her pouring her blood into her lover & she symbolically slits her own throat with her thumb..so powerful... thank you for discovering sharing & enjoying this .. I would also suggest her version of the song Caruso to react to

Even her quivering breaths sounds like she's on the brink of sobbing. And sometimes it's like the despair is to much to even bother singing the words as she just speaks them. And that moment when she drops the mic down and essentially shouts her pain at the audience. Magnificent. And then you see how it takes her a moment to compose herself after it's over because she is totally living the lyrics

Wow, your analysis is really very impressive. It gave me the opportunity to listen to the song again in a different way. "Je suis malade" was my entry into the world of Lara Fabian a few years ago. I had been incredibly impressed by Lara Fabian's performance. And it didn't stop at this song, because her other songs and performances are no less impressive. From this artist emanates a power and a joy that she transmits to the audience. This was a unique experience for me so far. When I see and hear Lara Fabian sing, I am spellbound every time, no matter how many times I have already seen or heard the song. Lara Fabian has been active as an artist since the end of the 80s. That's why I was really shocked that I first noticed this artist only a few years ago. To this day, I don't understand why I was exclusively fixated on the Anglo-American music world. Lara Fabian has opened up new horizons for me. My absolute favorite concert of hers is her 2003 concert "En toute intimite" at the Olympia Theater in Paris, where accompanied by violin, cello and piano, she performs reinterpretations of her own and other songs: for me, supreme musical art and entertainment, magnificent. Her best album for me is her album "Le Secret" from 2013. This album unfolds a stronger and stronger effect the more often you listen to it, simply great.

Your comments were all on point. Lara is a vocal master + an interpretation/storyteller/emotions conveyer master + a language master + a songwriter master. Here this is a cover, and I will give details on the story behind the song in a separate comment, but she made this song her own, as always. So just a few points highlighting some of your comments: - vocal mastery: she is known to have the most resonant voice in the world (consistently resonant on most of her vocal range) and is nicknamed The Ring by professionals due to this. She also has incredible breath management ( you saw it in Adagio and in this last note) and incredible phrasing (nobody has such a mastery to switch from speaking to singing within the same breath). She is classically trained and is receiving lessons on a daily basis. She still has a magical voice and control of it, I attended a concert last month and she received 9 standing ovations. - diction: she has the same diction level in all languages ( she sang in 12!). She pays attention to words because she is first and foremost a songwriter ( she wrote gems in 4 languages: french, english, italian and spanish). Her songs have been covered by the greatests: from Barbra Streisand, Shirley Bassey, Josh Groban to Dimash (he made several covers, she is his absolute idol), Floor Jansen, Morissette Amon, Diana Ankudinova, … - riding the fine line between crying and singing: she is an incredible vocal coach ( Star Academy Quebec, Star Academy France, The Voice France, La Voix Quebec). She recently told a student : « how to sing emotions without impacting your voice? Sing the emotions in your head, feel the emotion in your heart, but keep your throat free! » Apparently it’s easy for her 😀 She is used to do this (check her Caruso). She is also an actress and is currently on screen with a second role in a quebec movie. - taking risks / exposing herself / being 100% committed to the story: Serge Lama, who wrote Je suis malade based on his own experience, told about her: « she is fantastic ! I admire her because she is emotionally indecent and exposes herself completely if this is needed to serve the story and convey the message » I will post also a comment about her career and background. I hope to see more reactions to her in your channel Thanks again

More information on Lara Fabian: Lara is recognized as one of the best vocalist ever seen on earth and all professionals list her in the top vocalist tier with Barbra, Whitney, Mariah, Celine, Lisa Fischer, .... In my personal opinion, she is even the best. There are a few vocal characteristics that are her signature: her famous resonance for instance that allows her to sing acapella without mic in venues with 8,000 attendees. Her nickname in the singing world is "the ring" due to this. I would also list her amazing phrasing, breath management and her pleasant tone even when belting in her upper register. So she is one of the best vocalist ever, but on top of that, she adds a few things that make her an absolute package with no equivalence: • she speaks 2 languages natively (french, italian), and 2 others fluently (english, spanish), can speak a bit of dutch (and sicilian), and understand quite well russian and portuguese. She has sung in 12 languages in total • she is an amazing songwriter and wrote lyrics for most her songs, in the 4 languages she speaks fluently. She often co-composes the music with the composer. • she acts and performs on stage as nobody else, she colors and reveals the meaning of every single word in the songs, and her ability to emote, to draw you in is second to none • she is the sweetest soul on earth, very humble, down to earth and benevolent. She likes to meet others, and her fans are always pleasantly surprised when this happens. A quick background on her and her career: She is belgian, her father is flemish, but also has italian roots (her mother is from sicilia) and American roots ( her grandfather is from Detroit). She was raised in sicilia first then in Belgium so she speaks both french and italian as native languages. She has been classically trained on vocal, piano and songs composition for 10 years ( from 8 to 18) in the Brussels Royal Conservatory. She is still having vocal lessons and training several times a week today. She started her career in Canada in the early 90s, more precisely in Quebec, the french-speaking part of Canada. She now lives in Montreal and has also Canadian citizenship She became very famous there and then conquered France in 1996/1997 (she topped charts there and some of her songs such as "Je t'aime" or "Tout" became classics of the french music). In 2000, she was about to penetrate the US Market, with a lot of media initial interest. Her first english song (I will love again), a pop dance song, stayed number one on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart for 58 weeks in a row and number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her Album ("Lara Fabian") was about to become a massive hit, and the concert "From Lara With Love" was recorded to be broadcasted everywhere in the US. This concert is legendary and the song you just reviewed is from this concert. But a dispute with Sony on artistry directions, and the will from Celine Dion's staff to block her progress in the US, completely broke this plan. She thus refocused back on Europe and made huge success there, extending her reach to Eastern Europe and Central Asia where she became an absolute superstar thru her collaboration with Igor Krutoy during several years. She is also a star in Brazil as her song "Love By Grace", used as the soundtrack for a very famous soap opera, topped the charts for months. Many of her songs became classics and were covered by the other singing legends: Barbra Streisand, Shirley Bassey, Josh Groban, … With her success in Europe, Brazil and part of Asia, she is the inspiration of the new generation of vocalists: most of them are coming from there. Thru their covers of Lara Fabian songs, USA and many other countries are now rediscovering her. She is Dimash's idol: I’ve read somewhere that, when he was a child, he was listening her songs every night to get asleep. He covered many of her songs (that she performed originally ; she also wrote some of these). Out of my mind I can list: ○ Adagio, ○ Mademoiselle Hyde, ○ Know/Vocalise/Ascolta La voce ○ Love of tired swans She also wrote the lyrics of his song « Your Love ». And she covered « Love is like a dream » before him (song from Igor Krutoy originally performed by Alla Pugacheva). They also performed Ti Amo Cosi together with Aida Garafulina: this is a song that she performed originally with Dmitriy Hvorostovsky and Alina Yaroyava then again later with Dmitriy and Sumi Jo, before this new trio with Dimash and Aida. Dimash is now also working with Igor Krutoy: Igor and Dimash connected after his Adagio cover, also endorsed by Lara ; Igor came back from retirement and composed severals songs for him after it. Many other top vocalists from the current generation covered her songs: ○ Floor Jansen (Adagio), ○ Polina Gagarina (Adagio, Je t’aime), ○ Diana Ankudinova (Tomorrow is a lie), ○ Morissette Amon (Broken Vow), ○ Gabriel Henrique (Love by Grace), ○ Cakra Khan (Broken Vow), ○ Katrina Velarde (Broken Vow), ○ Regine Velasquez (Broken Vow), ○ Giulia Falcone (Adagio, Caruso, Je suis malade, Je t'aime), ○ Daria Bentsa (I guess I loved you), ○ Julie Anne san Jose (Broken Vow), ○ Rimar ( Adagio, Broken Vow), ○ Il Divo (Adagio) ○ Sarah Geronimo (Broken Vow) ○ Laura Bretan ( Adagio, Caruso), ○ Jackie Evancho (Je t’aime, Caruso and Broken Vow, BV rewritten as « Imaginer » by Lara for Jackie), ○ Almira (from 4th Impact band) (Broken Vow), ○ Amir (Je t’aime), ○ Anastasia Luna (Adagio), ○ Choi Sung Hoon (Je suis malade), ○ Forestella (Je suis Malade), ○ Petra Berger (Adagio, Broken Vow), ○ Katerina Maslova (Je t’aime, I guess I loved you) ○ .... NB: Lara did cover Caruso and Je suis malade, these are not her originals, but I mention these here as the related artists were attracted to cover it again after listening to Lara’s version. Today, Lara still has an amazing voice and tone and can still reach the 5th octave with resonance ; she still offers these emotive renditions that are her unique signature. In June 2022, she kicked off a WW tour and stunned her fans once again with 5 magical concerts in Canada. She completed the europe part in September/October and I attended a concert from this tour. It was packed and she was again spectacular. Sorry if I was long, but I hope this gives some context on Lara.

And she has many amazing english songs that she wrote and were covered by the greatests. But nobody can be a match to her originals, even Barbra Streisand, Josh Groban, Dimash, Floor Jansen, Morissette Amon, … who tried 😀 On the opposite, when she makes s cover like here, she often pushes the song and the related story to new heights

@@ericsicard910 I don't know about others but Josh is very respectful and kind, both to his fellow singers and to his fans. I don't think that he wanted or tried to surpass Lara: he is a great fan of hers and he is very humble.

@@vervideosgiros1156 I do agree about Josh, he has always claimed to be a fan of Lara and see her as a mentor since they met for A.I. I was not saying these amazing singers wanted to put Lara in the shadow, but that Lara is so unique with her vocal skills and emotions conveying skills that, even these great names, do not match her when they do covers of her songs. She is so connected to the story and the words, that, as a listener, you always find something more with her originals that others don’t offer.

@@ericsicard910 I agree with you. I love both of them. I've been a fan of Lara since 2001 and Josh since 2007; they are my favorite singers. Josh is my favorite, because I love his music and voice even more than I love her music and voice, but when it comes to singing skills and emotion, I love her even more: she's unmatched!

I am not sure. On the concert Dvd, the sequence is as follows: 1. Love by Grace 2. Perdere L’Amore 3. I will love again 4. You are not from here 5. Je suis malade 6. I am who I am 7. Caruso 8. Yeliel (My angel) 9. Quedate 10. Adagio 11. Broken Vow Also recorded at the same concert, you can find it in yiutube, but not released on DVD • White Christmas • Otro Amor Vendra • Till I get over you • To Love Again

Hi, I'm french and, so you know, it's a cover from a song perfored by Serge Lama in 1975. Other songs you should watch and react could be "fou d'amour" a duet with Johnny Halliday and "Tu es mon autre" an other duet with an other great singer Mauranne. Thank you for your reaction

Thank you for your heartfelt reaction. I appreciate your insight into the artist’s challenge of blending personal emotion with vocal technique. I believe another artist that does this, and leaves an emotional impact with her performance and lyrics, is Diana Navarro covering El Perdon . You did a brief short (42 secs) on this a while ago and commented on some of her vocal techniques but did not mention the emotional impact of what Diana was trying to communicate. Would love your reaction to the full studio performance with the English subtitles. Diana Akudinova also performs a very emotional song with English subtitles translated as The Ornery Horses. She really gets into the song. (2020.09.17. Kohи) Also, her shyness, at attempting this difficult cover for the first time, and then hoping that she did it justice is revealing. Lastly, the group Disturbed does a black and white official studio version of The Sound of Silence. For gut impact this video version is not to be missed.

I am always touched by this performance, although I have a preference for Caruso. Great to have your comments. If you like to see an other side of Lara’s interpretative skills, consider reacting to Requiem pour un fou, with Johnny Halliday.

@peta pap You beat me to it. I like to make that exact same suggestion to reactors. Lara is showing more of a powerful rock voice but still is able to pull the audience into the song, convey the emotions let them feel it. Btw Caruso is my favorite too followed by Requiem pour un fou. After those things remain a bit unclear, but you'll find the Italian version of Adagio and Je suis malade up there...
