The writer of this song, Lucio Dalla (from Bologna, northern Italy), wrote this in 1986 while staying in one of the rooms where Enrico Caruso, former famous tenor (From Neaples, southern Italy), spent the final days of his life. Caruso was 48-years-old when he died, and a few years before Caruso died, he married Dorothy Park Benjamin who was 20 years younger. They had a baby girl they named Gloria. Lucio Dalla wrote this song while imagining how Caruso, who knew he was dying, would have said goodbye to his young wife - the love of his life.

Hi Dereck, Glad you reacted to this one, it is such a tough song to sing, usually it is only sang by lyrical singers... but Lara does such a great job, her version is the only one I actually like, cause she unlike most is more concerned about telling the story than showing off her vocal skills. You really do have to listen to her duet with Maurane "Tu es mon autre". They sound like violin and bass... it will blow your mind ! 😉

Not many many singers can sing their heart and soul out like Lara does here and in other songs as well. Besides when the singer has a very emotional and strong/powerful voice and sings with passion. Then it takes just as much effort for the pianist to be able to follow through the song. You should check Take Me to Church with Morgan James!
