There were a handful of Streisand songs that I respected but my feeling was that everything Streisand did was about Streisand. Lara's personality allows her to communicate deeply with her audience. Nobody disagrees that Steisand has skills. She is a unique vocalist, but Lara is in a class by herself. Lara is my drug of choice. :)

I agree with you regarding the generations. I am French and I had a poster of Barbra Streisand in my room! Lara has made my eyes watery with this version. I never understood the french critics for Lara. She is something else!

I am French Canadian....and I never agreed with the french critics....her voice, her range and her control are phenomenal...she does not only sing a song, she makes you feel the story of the song...to me she is the best.

This is the definitive version. She’s at the pinnacle of her power during this performance. It leaves me sobbing. Just freaking sobbing. Every time. And I’ve seen it dozens of times; Lara is my drug, and I overdose on her regularly. If she’d tried to go to Broadway, she’d have ruled New York. And yes, this is better than Barbra.

I think what is especially impressive is that Barbra hadn't performed this live but Lara matches Barbra's studio performance with her Live performance. Imagine what she could do in a studio. Then again, she tends to give her best performances in front of an audience.

True story: I just never cared for the original. It wasn't my thing. No hate for Streisand or song. But when I heard Fabian's version I damn near cried, to my astonishment. Don't even know why. Maybe more life lived added to my response. (But I give the Lion's share of credit to Fabian 😁)

When Lara sings the high, belty notes, there is still a softness to it. This is unlike any other female singer I’ve ever heard. I am also a huge Barbra Streisand fan . I hear some similarities between the two of them. They’re both amazing. My favorite Lara performance is definitely “je suis malade”

Indeed she was broadly mocked by French critics for singing too loud, shouting, yelling. She broke down live in interviews on the topic of her critics. It also all came about around her release of her bilingual album All The Women In Me, which she invested so much of herself into and yet was a huge critical and commercial flop. It destroyed her.
@danielakeller75324 жыл бұрын
Yes i think she really had a difficult time there, i recently saw a video from the production of the nue album and she said there was a time where she didn‘t want to live anymore and that was so touching.
@abc456f4 жыл бұрын
I've never thought of her as shouting or yelling. Her belting is always under control. One singer who I do feels yells sometimes is Michael Bolton. I enjoy him when he's singing softer. But when he gets loud, my reaction is, "Why are you screaming at me?"

Besides being a little off pitch in the beginning this is just amazing. No she is not screaming all the time, what idiots say that?? She is the opposite, very dynamic and soulful and so on. She can change the timbre of her voice so she is a master. Can't people hear that it's not her fault. Thanks!

Just watched your reaction and read some of the stuff your followers wrote. I think I'm of your generation and agree there were some very good singers "back then", but then again ... not that much. Lara's voice is (in my opinion) less nasal than Barbra. I like this version of these songs better than Barbra's.

that is something i never quite understood about fandom. how can you hate on the idol of your idol xD sure you could prefer your idols performance, but in the end said artist picked out the techniques/styles from their idol. for me i like all 3 barbara, lara and dimash, but my favorite is lara.

About the critics, I think she came at the wrong time. There was Céline Dion, who wasn't much into subtlety, and other Canadian trained female with powerful voice singer... French were joking about Canada sending them to France to get rid of them. But music critics never had a big impact on people tastes in France.

Les français n’aiment pas les chanteuses a voix malgré qu’ils aiment peut-être hypocritement Céline Dion et surtout avec cette version elle étais beaucoup plus jeune Bravo Lara.

For the difference between this version with the original, I believe that Lara Fabian was influenced by the version of the duet by Michel Legrand , the original composer/song writer , with Ginette Reno at the Montréal Jazz Festival in 1986. Unfortunately the conversion from the video file to digital have butchered the synchronisation but you still can find it at : kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5nKhImohNyJja8
