Let me give you the context of this performance. This is a cover of her idol Barbra Streisand. Medley means this is a combination, here a combination of 2 songs : Papa Can You Hear Me and Piece of Sky. Yentl is the name of the 1983 musical movie starring Barbra that included these 2 songs. Yentl is a masterpiece, a musical drama movie that is one of the most personal project from Barbra Streisand. The story is based on a short story “Yentl the Yeshisha book” from Isaac Bashevis Singer and Barbra stars in this movie as a jewish girl who is secretly studying Talmud by her father (normally reserved to men) and after his death disguise herself in a man to attend rabbinical studies. And there falls in love with a male schoolmate. The 1983 movie was critically and publicly acclaimed and won several oscars including the music and soundtrack. The 2 songs here were composed by french legend Michel Legrand. It was his 3rd oscar for movie music as he had already won 2 for The Thomas Crown Affair ("The Windmills of Your Mind") and The Summer of ‘42. Lara is an absolute fan of Barbra and this cover is a tribute to her. These are 2 very difficult songs and it’s quite rare to find singers able to perform these live and chained (was Lara the only one?). I call this perf “Lara in broadway mode” and you can see here her vocal skills and her stamina but also her acting skills. Barbra said to Lara: "I don’t say this very often but you are very good". And later Barbra covered Lara’s masterpiece Broken Vow in some of her own concerts. Her parents were attending this concert, as they were celebrating their wedding’s 30th birthday, and Lara often focuses on her dad during this perf. She dedicated them later in the concert another cover she made: I will always love you.

Barbra Streisand's version is definitely a must watch. Not to compare but to hear Lara's respect to the original version (twice the pleasure)❤
@ericsicard910 Жыл бұрын
@@monaboutet6863 I think you mean the movie, right? Yes it is very true. For instance, I believe that when, on the last note, Lara kneels down and the camera is making a backward traveling, this is reminiscent of the last movie scene with Barbra on the front of the boot and the camera making the same backward traveling move until the boot becomes a single plot on the ocean. It gives the same visual impression overall 😀

She's the best !

Oh, i am glad you liked it so much ! But let me correct you: Lara is not TELLING a story, she is LIVING the story and we are drawn in like when we are attending good movies. She always impersonates the character and FEELS the emotions that the words are creating. And, as she is also exceptional in sharing these emotions around, she conveys these emotions to the audience in a very intimate and personal way. She is also unique as she is riding this fine line that allows both to live intense emotions and still deliver perfect vocals. The emotions don’t impact her vocals in her case, this is such a very rare case of voice/emotions decoupling. She once said, when she was acting as a vocal coach in a singer contest in Quebec: “How to sing intense emotions without impacting your voice? Sing the emotions in your head, feel the emotions in your heart, but keep your throat free” Apparently this seems easy for her, pfff.....

Celine Dion and her management team pressured Sony to keep Lara Fabian from being known in the United States around the time that she recorded "Lara with Love" around the year 2000. Celine was so threatened by Lara's talent that she literally got Lara cancelled in United States before she even got started here. I like you discovered Lara on a reaction video a couple years ago and I've been down the Lara Fabian Rabbit Hole ever since. I believe there is room for everybody with talent in the musical realm but what Celine Dion did in my opinion, is unforgivable. Because of Celine Dion, I missed, along with everybody else in our country, over two decades of hearing and enjoying Lara Fabian's wonderful voice and music. Remember, this was way before the internet and the control the powers that be had in the music industry! I literally threw away all my CDs and LPs of Celine Dion, I'm done. This might answer your question why you never heard of Lara Fabian till now.

Mahalo for sharing that piece of information with us! For me, I was never a fan of Celine Dion as her songs are mostly too punchy. She doesn’t know how to go soft and airy; more like soft and piercing…..if that makes any sense? So I never really listened to her when she was popular. But now I am disgusted just knowing she would do something like this! But there are some artists out there that are vipers! They are jealous of people who are better than them!

Happened across your channel recently. I’m huge Lara Fabian fan and now I’m a huge fan of yours. I love your reactions - the most genuine and insightful I have heard in a long time. Bravo! And reading some of the comments about Lara’s story just infuriates me. No matter what kind of music you are into and no matter who you are in the industry - you have to give this woman mad respect for putting every ounce of herself into all her performances and having one of the fullest most brilliant voices I’ve ever heard. Now I’m going down the CVTEK/Lara Fabian rabbit hole!

I think it's abut time we acknowledge the fact that Lara Fabian is a much more "complete" and versatile artist than even Barbra Streisand herself. I know Streisand has a huge ego but I think she saw it too when she asked Lara if she could do a cover of Lara's Broken Vow. She never did this medley live but she said if anybody could it was Lara. Everything she does is just virtuosic and magical.
@ericsicard910 Жыл бұрын
Barbra did it live apparently in a couple concerts of one of her tour. But it was not recorded.
@lizatsurkan4323 Жыл бұрын
Barbra is a much more real performer
@hornerinf Жыл бұрын
@@lizatsurkan4323We must disagree. Lara is way more an emotional performer and versatile artist. Barbra doesn’t write any of her songs or play an instrument. Lara sings in twelve languages and somehow conveys the emotions in every one. Barbra can’t do any of that. She is a singer and an actress…and a very obviously egotistical “hollywood” type. She has a great voice and technique. She is a song stylist. I think she is a legend in her own right but I have never felt a single emotion listening to her. I was in the recording business for over fifty years in L.A and I heard so many stories of how Barbra mistreated people I couldn’t stand hearing or watching her. I don’t want to repeat stories here but I just can’t be a Streisand fan because of her personality. Lara, on the other hand, is not phony and exudes graciousness.

@ericsicard910 Жыл бұрын
@@jaydeeess8996you can’t compare the cut scenes from a movie and a chained live performance of the 2 songs. But even if you do, for me, and I listened again recently the movie (i adore it), I prefer this live to the movie original. It’s more powerful and she is even better acting here. And I am comparing Lara knowledgefully to the great Barbra, who won Oscar and Grammies for her impressive acting and roles.
