Also, you people you might find it gross, but in southern Spain we use raw Iberic pork leaf fat. We remove the membrane and put it trough grinding, then add coarse salt and mix. No rendering. That stuff is beyond incredible on toast.

Noticed no cheesecloth filtering. I do the same, just the strainer. It really doesn't bother me to have a little granulated "residue". Some people filter it so many times.

I've started using lard with ghee butter, the flavour combo does something amazing to food.

New subscriber and loving your content! We use lard and store in the fridge but i had no idea it could be stored in a root cellar- so good to know! I actually love to use it half and half with avocado oil in homemade mayo too 😊

I need to try it in mayo! Thanks for sharing and for watching :)

Just getting on the lard/tallow train. Come upon your channel and am enjoying your tutorials. I live in an area where the local farmers only grow vegetation. Can you recommend a site that will sell online that you know are reliable? Many thanks.

This is a good question! I haven't done much research into this but I should. I know there are several larger regenerative farms that ship now (i.e. 5 Mary's Ranch, White Oak Pastures). Thanks for watching!

First of all, great tutorial for lard! Thank you for that. I have a question, mostly unrelated but, I have seen you use a particuliar stove. I never have seen one like it. Maybe you talked about it in other videos but, I really want to know more about this stove!

I'm so new to all this. I learned a lot about lard today. I live in AZ, so what temp. does it need to store well, and how long will it last? How long will it keep in the refrig. too? Thanks for your help!
@FromScratchFarmstead2 жыл бұрын
It will store for several months in the fridge which is what we do. Thanks for watching and glad it was helpful!

I just bought my first bucket of lard. So far it’s been awesome. Anything you would use that unhealthy vegetable shortening for- lard is the answer.

What is the ratio for pounds of raw fat needed to get 3 pints or qt jars of rendered fat.
@FromScratchFarmstead8 ай бұрын
Oh good question....I usually do 5-8 lbs of fat at a time and will get 4-6 quarts of fat. That's a wide range but I'm not sure of the exact amounts. Thanks for watching!

Yes...lard has bad name but I'm going to my Butcher, local farmer. Already have gee and other fats but really believe in diversity. Thank you. New sub!🤔💙🙏💙💚🕊💚💞💓💕😇

Awesome! I agree with you that diversity with those healthy fats is a good idea. Thanks for watching!!

LARD IS GREAT. MY GREAT GRANNY HAS COOKED WITH LARD FOR CLOSE TO 100 YEARS. BUT GOOD LARD NOW HAS BECOME REALLY EXPENSIVE.💰💰💰💰MORE EXPENSIVE THAN ANY OILS. BUTCHERS SELL IT NOW AT A PREMIUM PRICE💰💰💰💰💰
@FromScratchFarmstead2 жыл бұрын
We can still find it very affordably at some local farms but probably depends on location! Thanks for watching!

@@FromScratchFarmstead Not here in fl. Miami! At whole foods it's 16 Dollars a Pound. For the free range Pig Fat! Sure you can buy that cheap Lardn by Amour, in that square cardboard box. But it's full preservatives and farmed from mass production pigs😩😩😩it smells bad too.

Good stuff! I'm rendering 18lbs of fat tonight with a friend:) We'll be using my massive pot for the job, and my reward will be some bear fat!

Hi! Is it the first time you use bear fat? I wonder if it has a particuliar taste?
@misschris325 Жыл бұрын
@@eggpoutine Yes, it's my first time using bear fat. I got a bit off a friend of a friend. The jar is dated 2020- not saying it's too old, but it just tasted like pork lard. I'm thinking freshness may be a factor. The bottom of the jar has lil pieces of bear hairs 😲.

One request: can we have much less music over the talking bits? I was really Interested in this lard discussion, but as a hearing impaired person it was too hard to follow.
