Testing our pulse-jet powered snowmobile prior to Speed Weekend on Ice in Orsa 15-16 February 2013.
With the new engine we increased the thrust to 1700N (~380lbs) witch is ~600N (135lbs) more than last year's race.

A friend and I many years ago now bought a little 4 pound thrust pulse jet. My friend and I where home on leave USAF. We ran it on the drive way bolted to a six by six timber. We got it running and set the asphalt drive way on fire. My dad came out the door with his high ball ( burbon and water) in hand and said. When the fire department shows up I'll tell them you two do not live here you are just passing thru. How cool is a dad like that, he passed away and we always had a good laugh about that. Miss his humor a lot.

This reminds me of work I did in the '80s with open megaphone racing exhausts, you are in effect controlling a harmonic pulse like a church organ pipe. How did you arrive at the tailpipe length? The reason I ask is it looks as though the pipe is a little short, especially if the flair cone had such an effect in the way it did.

What happend if you put an inverted conical extension? I mean ... the end part smaller. Just a question.
@fahadislam1849
@fahadislam1849 10 жыл бұрын
The engine would just set fire to the fuel without producing any noticeable thrust like at the beginning of the video when the pulse jet wasn't starting properly and created a lot of soot. This is because pulse jets rely on the fast moving exhaust gases to create a pressure drop in the combustion chamber so that hot exhaust gases are automatically fed back into the combustion chamber to ignite the next batch of fuel. So a pulse jet engine has 4 cycles: suck, bang, blow, exhaust suck back. If you add an inverted conical extension, the pressure inside the combustion cylinder will be higher than the pressure outside the cylinder so the exhaust gases won't get sucked back into the engine as low pressure does not move to high pressure and then the engine will be missing one of its 4 cycles to function properly. An easy way to remember this is, fast moving fluid=low pressure fluid and slow moving fluid=high pressure fluid.

it's like a giant flamethrower...a ramjet can produce much more thrust in more concentrated beams of energy... with that being said you should try a ramjet instead, or if you are top of the like type of guy a turbo ramjet should be your fit. this means it'll just have bypass tubes sitting over the multistage diffuser and carrying air that entered the necel all be way to where the thrust exits the afterburners, an just optimizing maximum thrust capabilities.
