Our next production at Shakespeare in the Vines is "A Winter's Tale", wherein one scene involves a large bear. We could rent or build a cheesy bear costume, but we decided on building a two-person-operated puppet. It allows the actors to get in and out with the bear quickly and be ready for their next cues without having to climb out of a suit.
I start at the head, using an expanded polyurethane foam head for a black bear. I want this puppet to be more bulky and dramatic, so I'm adding mass using craft foam sheets, which were 33 cents each. I cut out shapes that enhanced contours in some areas, using high-temperature hot glue. The heat softens the foam as I shape it to make a smooth surface.
The next videos in this series will demonstrate the armatures I will make for the arms, paws, shoulder blades, and neck.
The black bear change-out head (SKU W-222-88CM) can be found on the Research Mannikins, Taxidermy Supply website, specifically here: rmi-online.com/.... They did not sponsor this video in any way, I just found their price the most reasonable.
