As a machinist I have to tell you, that's a really nice gyroscope, and I've always wanted to make one but haven't gotten around to it even after over 30 years. Does a gyro only experience spin down from wind resistance and bearing friction? I notice when someone tries to force a gyro to move out of its natural position requires a lot of force. Is that force only distributed on the bearings? Meaning all that force is just sliding? Would less efficient bearings cause a greater spin down when a force is applied?

That is a very well built piece of equipment. It would be very interesting if you could set it up with degree marks (on a piece of paper under it) and a fixed camera (above it), for say six hours. It would move 90 degrees, because of the earths rotation is 90 degrees in six hours.

Blog Kidzz by that them I mean the gyro itself is spinning, but you don't try to rotate it like he is when he pushes on it
@ScottNolasco8 жыл бұрын
Good question actually! While it's hard to see in the video, gyroscopes don't resist the urge to fall, but rather, to *twist* along an axis. So the object you are describing would certainly fall at a normal speed, but it would be hard to turn or re-orientate in another direction.
@buggsy55 жыл бұрын
A spinning gyro does not lose weight, so cannot cancel gravity and float. There are at least two videos demonstrating this.

How would it react if both axis's were spinning at the same time and the same speed?
@dwilliams20685 жыл бұрын
It's probably a little known fact that if you constrain a gyroscope such that it cannot tilt when you move it, it does not resist at all. It only resists when it has some slight freedom to tilt towards it's normal tilt direction.

Dear Ed! I've tested a big gyroscope when I was in the 2 course at the University. But, actually, always in my life I wanted to build one. Can you provide some information about it? What type of bearings are in this gyro? Any dimensions of the gyro itself? Unfortunately, I can't find a video on how to, or any dimension of these gyros. I know that you can make it with whatever size you want, but I like your results! :) Thanks and BR! Bobby
@gigicaly8 жыл бұрын
+magdanoz88 I was thinking same thing about the schematics, but you know what? it's not that difficult to build once you understand the basic principles and have the right tools. Sure out of brass looks better but you can use pretty much anything. The basic rules apply to all shapes and sizes. The bearings must be able to handle w/e spin is there and the calibrations must be just right, other than that it's all simple math. My suggestion for you is get information on bearings and start from that to put a plan on paper. Have faith in your mind.

really? .................. earth rotation?
@Nintencrow8 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Navigational gyroscopes are suspended in such a way as to keep spinning for hours and also have motors to keep them at around 12.000 RPM. Say you point a spinning gyroscope at the north star and wait a few hours (assuming it doesn't stop), it will still point at the north star after an hour, even though the earth has rotated 1/24 of it's circumference. This is how ships navigate without using magnetic compasses.
@jadekayak018 жыл бұрын
Eliark your explanation is far to simplified. all navigational gyros are automatically corrected for earths rotation by a very precise and compkicated spring arraingement.
@Nintencrow8 жыл бұрын
Partly true. I did not claim navigational gyro__compasses__ (which contain two or more gyros and are suspended in liquid, weighted and digitally corrected on top of a "spring arrangement") were affected in the same way. Please read more carefully before accusing me of being wrong about something I know more about than you. A balanced, spinning gyroscope left on a flat, stationary surface will always precede according to earth's rotation. Edit: I see I may have formulated myself unclearly, but I still never state anything outside of the experimental "system" of a spinning gyro pointed at a star. The rest is your assumption. At any rate, the comment from OGW was not "please give a detailed explanation" but a simple question with a simple answer: "yes".
