Likely final purpose: a ventilation shaft (wide diameter lowers air resistance and required air velocity for given volume), and probably a downcast shaft (slab does not seem large enough for fan infrastructure). The concrete piles and excavation shown are to overcome the first 50m of soft weathered ground you find everywhere in QLD (they also provide serious anchorage for vent control devices or blast doors later). Once this preliminary excavation is completed, and the collar is secureed a raisebore can be set up over the hole to complete the shaft to full depth. Normally this type of job would use a small excavator in the hole and a skip to hoist spoils, traditional ground support (shortcrete, bolts & mesh, cablebolts) can then be install by hand as the shaft progressively deepens (ie fast, cheap, and easy). However the OH&S in QLD prevents this kind of approach, so "no-entry" methods (as seen in the video) are used instead.

Yes aussie OH & S is usually great but we still had fatalities in tunnel projects . That safety fence around the hole wouldnt pass muster with us since we had a site event where an 85 year old lady with dementia pushed her way through a security fence and started walking past open excavation pits , D10 Dozers , excavators and haul trucks before we grabbed her and escorted her back to the gate. . .

You guys are way more careful drilling than we are in America. Not sure if it's the soil difference or what but drillers here punch 3-5 meter diameter holes 30 meters deep and just fill them with water and soda ash to hold the shape.
@chouseification6 жыл бұрын
I'm not in the trade, but I was wondering the same thing myself - I've seen things along the lines of displacement drilling, filling the cavity with "mud" to hold the wall until the entire bore is filled with mud - then they build a slip wall or drop in some rebar and a form and pour from the top... That soil in QLD must be really really soft or something, since they reinforced that entire wall with the rebar columns before even starting to dig.
@danotorioust28676 жыл бұрын
Notice the Drill bit is constantly changed, they are just drilling pilot holes over and over they seem to hit a snag notice they stop using the large drill bit and use smaller ones to clean up the in side wall it would have been easier to use large bit to bottom,they seem to hit a few hard sections this is why they drill small to start and slowly step up size, also when ground water is filling up a drill hole this can cause collapses so fluid is mixed to increase the thickness of water making cuttings return easier and creating a stable wall inside drill hole, if no water is encountered you can drill if ground is stable like the video Drilling Clay and weathered rock (aged rock) if there were sand and gravel layers then they would require mud to stabilise the hole

Cool technique, but it seems to have some rather severe limitations on how deep and fast the drill can go.
@dmd85523 жыл бұрын
That doesn't really matter as long as it can do the jobs it's hired to do cheaper, better or faster than other equipment.

Agreed I see very many limitations with this... First of all the digging material seems to be in the white pole and not contiusly emptied..

This is called bored piers with soldier piles as a retention, the spoil is collected at the toe with the smaller diameter bucket (see the moxy taking spoil away), once depth is reached the remaining spoil is fed by an excavator in a bin with a crane till B.E.L is reached.

i could use twelve of these spaced evenly, set up just inside the perimeter of a large circle.... but then i would have to plum all of them to be exactly parallel with each other, compensating for the curvature of the earth and everything else.....
@matthewnorman75076 жыл бұрын
no.. it is a method of creating a space elevator using parallel particle beams as the tether that the platform travels up and down...
@thedave77606 жыл бұрын
Yeah go on Mathew. If that's all you need to build space tether then these guys can do it for you I'm sure. Call Elon I'm sure he will be happy to pay for it once he gets the hyperloop built.
@Dockhead6 жыл бұрын
what you been smoking
@matthewnorman75076 жыл бұрын
the tether so to speak, is not really there.. the beams emitted, carrying a compressed magnetic flux, are for the purpose of keeping the platform centered and steady as it travels up or down between the parallel beams. the big holes are to house the beam emitters... if it functions as i have desired to design it, it will be usable at any latitude and not have to be restricted to the equator.
