Two separate large flocks of wild turkeys make their way across a road by flying over it to the trees on the other side of the road to roost for the night in rural Pennsylvania.

- Wild turkeys can run about 25 miles per hour. - Wild turkeys are arboreal, meaning they roost in trees. - While wild turkeys can zoom at their leisure, the turkeys we eat at Thanksgiving - you know, the domesticated kind - cannot fly. Why? For one thing, farmers have bred them over time to have very large breasts, which makes them better for eating. The downside of having large, muscular breasts is that it inhibits the turkey’s flight. As Brian Palmer explained in The Washington Post, “The turkey breast gets stronger as it gets larger, but the animal’s power-to-mass ratio diminishes, so it can’t flap quickly enough to support sustained flight.” Essentially, the turkeys become too thicc to fly.

We have them here in Southern Ontario. I’ve definitely seen them fly. Once I remember one late summer evening, driving down a country road and seeing one gracefully glide from the sloped field to my right for about 100 meters or more across my front, to come down for a nice touchdown on the left side of the road. It was pretty impressive. .. Then as I reached where it had landed and was driving passed, it panicked and ran straight into the wire fence in front of it! 🤦‍♂️… It was slightly stunned, but soon recovered and ran down the fence line for a few meters before fluttering over it and disappearing into the brush beyond.

I was fishing the Cumberland river in Nashville 2 months ago. Walked 2 miles and saw what I thought was 20 turkeys in someone's backyard 1/4 of a mile before my slightly arduous climb down the riverbank. While baiti.g up, they started flying over me to a farm on the other side of a pretty large river. Dropped my pole to grab my phone after 10 or so flew over my head. No more turkeys until I swapped phone for fishing pole. 20 flew over. Back to phone. And no more turkeys. I thought that was it again and picked up my fishing pole again. And another flight of turkeys. I missed 3 great opportunities. It was a blast regardless.

my mother used to tend chicken and a small herd of turkey's back in the old country greece all that during the second world war... germans soldiers used to come and cease - steal food and animals from the locals. mother said ...when the turkeys saw the germans they sensed great danger and took off ...they flew away ...mother had never seen turkeys flying before .... ( domesticated ones we re talking about) she told me characteristically... I don't blame them birds nazis could even make pigs fly.

The Commercial Group are the turkeys you get from the store and they can't fly. The Heritage Group are the turkeys kept as pets with a body like a Wild turkey. They are able to fly and do anything a Wild turkey can do.

Not far. About 400 metres at most. They fly at a reasonably high speed for short distances.
