With models representing the history of the railroads in Cairo, the Grady County History Museum has a wonderful (and a rather noisy) model train layout comprising of two tables, two hanging tracks from the ceiling, and a train along the wall with a model trolley running back and forth on it. Also displayed on the walls are railroad based artworks, railroad signs, and history displays talking about the history of trains and railroads in Grady County. The County has a long history with the railroads, mainly and starting with the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad in 1869, which led to the Cairo's founding the following year. The line was later reorganized as the Savannah Florida and Western which was later merged with the Atlantic Coast Line. Models with names for these lines are on this layout, as well as a locomotive lettered for the Pelham and Havana Railroad, which ran from Havana Florida into Cairo, but never made it into it's intended northern terminus of Pelham, Ga. That line was closed and abandoned in the early 1920's, but a large painted mural representing the line is painted on the outside of the museum. The ACL line (now CSX) is runs between the museum and the old depot, so if you go to the museum, you just might see an actual train too.
