It’s the everlasting con that’s propped up by his cultist followers. I’ve seen people seriously say that he’s a rocket scientist who single-handedly built up SpaceX. When I pointed out that SpaceX hired actual rocket scientists for that and all Elon ever did was hold them back with unworkable ideas, they claimed that Elon “didn’t need them” and only took them in to be nice after all his genius designs were done. Yes, really.

Further evidence that a number of federal agencies are being misled by Musk and/or not doing their homework. The CT and FSD are the act of getting away with everything no other car maker can because so far he’s managed to pretend without legal or regulatory repercussion that Tesla isn’t the car company it is. One week it’s a robotics company, another week it’s a software company, then an AI company…when he decides to put a CT in orbit so he can feel his face again, it’ll be a 3-dimensional transport company or something.

Musk is not an engineer. I am, and one of the most important attitudes one must have as an engineer... is to fear that things will never be as simple as originally imagined. Trucks these days more or less look all alike, and for good reason. This is the accumulated wisdom of a hundred years and millions of engineering hours to make it better all the time. Musk simply throws out all of it and imagines it "all different". Of course it does not work. Now retired, but not ONE of my projects in 50 years of engineering was perfect first time... in fact half of them were outright failures for all sorts of reasons. Engineering is NOT genius imagination or divine inspiration... it is a good idea, a good plan, funding, lots of planning, and then trial and error and the self confidence and discipline, that when it is not good enough... try again. And after a while you may have a product someone actually think it is good. Musk is so full of himself, that he imagines something and like all ego-maniacs he really thinks that all the critical work has been done at this point... after all he is a genius and they never get it wrong... lol

Something I learned in first year engineering design was to follow the design where the engineering requirements lead, not the other way around. Do you think some guy at Lockheed draws a stealth plane on a napkin, and they just go with it? Nah, they do aerodynamic and stealth simulations, they analyze for manufacturing and repair, etc. Musk just goes with the napkin like a Middle East Prince, putting a line city in the desert no matter what.

What aggravates me is that the people getting conned don't get mad at the conman, but they instead get mad at the people who are trying to save them from being conned - because they've developed a parasocial relationship of sorts, so it's sort of like Stockholm syndrome. You can clearly prove how they've been duped, year after year after year, yet they keep defending him. Maybe it also has something to do with sunk cost. Who knows? It's frustrating though.

This is what is called brand loyalty. It describes a customer's persistent positive feelings towards a familiar brand and their dedication to purchasing the brand's products and/or services repeatedly regardless of deficiencies, a competitor's actions, or changes in the market environment, according to Wikipedia. The reason they defend Elon Musk is mainly derived by having a lot of loyalty with the brand they buying, Elon Musk is a brand and he gained lots of trust from a certain number of people over the years with his lies, it is no surprise that they will be loyal to Elon Musk even when he consistently fails time and time again.
