TB is incredibly infectious and easy to transmit. It’s airborne spread through the infected person’s exhaled air. If you’ve sat next to someone with it on a bus you can get it.

I had Latent TB when I was 18, I had sore lungs for a few years and kept telling my mom but she ignored me and said nothings wrong, I never went to doctors or hospitals in my life, even though when I was a baby I almost died of Bronchitis so clearly my lungs are an issue. When we eventually went for an x-ray to see what was causing the pain I had a spot on my lung which was apparently scar tissue from the latent TB. So what I want to warn is please don't ignore your kid if they say there is something wrong listen to them you never know what could've happened, It could have been lung cancer...I went on antibiotics after I found out and my mom was isolating me wearing a mask around me when she found out, I had it for many years and soon as she finds out she stays away from me it was quite traumatic as I felt horrible for being sick when it wasn't even my fault, also please don't make your child feel like a disease it can have negative effects on their well being and mental health. I also had just got a boyfriend and obviosly wanted to see him all the time bt she told me I wasn't allowed to go anywhere or see him. My boyfriend came to see me anyway with his mom and they bought me a gift basket which was so nice and my aunt from england sent a gift basket to me as well. We all appreciate some sympathy in a bad situation so please be kind to people you don't know what they are going through.

TB is not like other infectious diseases that children receive vaccines for. Vaccination of children for TB ended in 2005. When the occurrence of a disease becomes very low it is no longer justified to immunize all children. This is the first major outbreak of TB in the US since the 1950's!! That should tell you something!!

I suspect the reason that the outbreak is so bad is because people aren't wearing masks. That is the best and first protective measure against TB. People who have it are supposed to wear masks when they aren't isolated. Unfortunately, anti-mask propaganda has led people to believe that masks are some sort of unnecessary evil . Vaccines for TB have never been super common, and they're not entirely necessary. Yes, I do remember a lot more testing for TB in the past as well- especially for hospital workers. There are a lot of elements at play here.

It’s transmitted through breathing in droplets in air.😢 You can touch a person with TB with bare hands but you cannot breathe in the same air. Imagine being in a dental clinic, and the dentist is drilling a tooth on a patient with his instrument, and all the saliva is being sprayed into the air into an aerosol form. You cannot see them but they are in the air. You don’t want to breathe this kind of air. You have to protect yourself with a mask. 😷
@LumiOlpero
@LumiOlpero 7 күн бұрын
That’s not how you get it. You have to breathe it in and be in close contact with an infected person for longer than 8 hours. And guess what? You still might not get it or you could get the latent form which will not hurt you and cannot be spread to other people. This news video was very short and before you commented, you should have watched it. All that info was in the video.
@Minah.R
@Minah.R 7 күн бұрын
@LumiOlpero The latent form can hurt you if you’re immune system becomes compromised or weakens with age so yeah it’s waiting for it’s moment to attack but some people get lucky and it remains that way until death either way if you get it treated before symptoms start you don’t have to worry about it being active don’t just hope for the best that stuff can kill children they get the most severe forms if unvaccinated.

Who is among those to be infected, young, old or both? Were many of them living together, in separate households, or working together consistently? Are the majority native to the counties or recently migrated to the area? Calm fears though transparency of the facts, which each county’s public heath department is well aware of and could share regarding these outbreaks, but they aren’t. 👎🏼

Should've gone to a different doctor and reported this one. This is definitely MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE and should be reported. You may have had TB, Whooping cough or COVID and if you live anywhere in the Southwest, anywhere, it could've been San Joaquin Valley Fever or coccidiodomycosis. You also should go to your PUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTMENT and get tested for TB. This is a terrible story and the DOCTOR SHOULD BE REPORTED. Go to public health and ask for a 'rule-out' TB and tell them what happened just to make sure. You could've had the flu also and I recommend that EVERYONE get a flu shot. I'm so sorry this happened and thanks for posting it here so I can tell EVERYONE to NEVER let this happen and it's negligence on the part of the doctor's office. NEGLIGENCE.

I remember my father being treated for this in the '60s. While he was at home, my mother put a piece of tape on the floor in front of his bedroom that I wasn't allowed to cross. I remember the sickly-sweet medicine I used to have to take every day. Eventually my father was sent to the state TB sanitarium a couple of hours away. I didn't see him for weeks. They later determined it was a rarer infection, and he had to go to Colorado and have a lobe of his lung removed. His scar was about a foot long. I didn't see him for months. Not to be taken lightly for sure.

@Jamesssssssssssssss
@Jamesssssssssssssss 3 күн бұрын
@@gc1172 It's great that you have easy access to care, but that's not the reality for many Americans. Even with insurance, people face high deductibles, co-pays, limited networks, and the constant fear of surprise bills and medical debt, which is a leading cause of bankruptcy. While urgent care is helpful, a preventative care focus, like those often prioritized in universal healthcare systems, could reduce the need for those expensive urgent visits in the first place, leading to better long-term health outcomes and potentially lower overall costs. Universal healthcare isn't just about "free" care; it's about ensuring everyone has timely and affordable access to a standard level of care, including specialists and preventative services, without fear of financial ruin. It's about a more efficient and equitable system that works for everyone, not just those who are currently fortunate enough to have good coverage.

How can this be the largest documented outbreak in the US? Tuberculosis has been around in the US since the very beginning. Before vaccines a huge share of the population got sick. On the Harvard Library's page called "Contagion Historical Views of Diseases and Epidemics" it says "by the late 19th century, 70 to 90% of the urban populations of Europe and North America were infected with the tuberculosis bacillus, and about 80% of those individuals who developed active tuberculosis died of it."

As of Jan. 24, 67 active cases of tuberculosis, or TB, had been reported in Wyandotte and Johnson counties in Kansas. The outbreak began last year, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment said on its website. It did not specify a source of the outbreak.

A lot of people are on immunosuppressive therapy, tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors and Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors, are at risk for TB 'reawakening' who had latent TB. Also, this illness was a really big scare for many years after AIDS came out and there were many cases that were resistant to antibiotics! @@Mop2247-tx Because 'they' don't know what they're talking about. When people are diagnosed with latent TB, if they're in a well funded public health area (a blue state), their public health department will treat them with isoniozid for 6 or 9 months PREVENTIVELY, depending on their exposure. If they're not in a blue state, only gawd knows how those draconian, barbaric republikkkans will treat them. Too bad.

@@KK_Missouri_Girl This outbreak likely has nothing to do with immigrants. The TB virus is present in every country - its ubiquitous. You cannot eliminate it. There is litteraly a century old vaccine; but the USA now rarely uses it and now people have to ask for it. But in the last several decades that the "anti-vaccine" movement has grown; and a lot of people are not vaccinated from many things. In my case (I'm in my late 60's) I received the TB vaccine in my youth; and again when I went into the Military in 1975 TB is virtually totally preventable with vaccination. A more reasonable explanation is none of these people received the TB vaccination; and they are not living healthy lifestyles. TB is mainly considered a disease of the poor because they cannot afford better living conditions or food, or have not been trained in certain things (even the poor can usually avoid TB if properly educated).

I work in a hospital, and we've encountered two cases. Both happened to be illegal immigrants. Two may not seem like a big number, but I've been in the hospital for 9 years and 2 cases in the last few months is a lot when its the ONLY 2 cases in my whole 9 years.

Most of us in this comment section are probably already infected with asymptomatic latent TB, aware or unaware of the dormant infection and it's always been like that and also why it'll always be around.
