From Wynton Marsalis "live at the Royal Albert Hall" London 2002. "Dreaming on a washboard" follows "Shiny stockings" already uploaded. This is a 13 minute number so I had to upload it in two parts.

Herlin is one of the best kept secrets in drumming. He can do more with a basic set of drums in any style, than I've seen from just about anyone.

I saw Herlin Riley perform at Snug Harbor in New Orleans last weekend with his quartet. He totally had the audience engaged and in the palm of his hand. One of the best musical experiences I ever had, he is a national treasure.

It’s been 9 years since I was at that Snug Harbor show. I had a feeling I was seeing a master at work. Nearly a decade later, his beats from Frenchman street are still hitting me.

Saw this guy live at Columbus day of percussion! He did not disappoint! I just love how he really gets in to the music that hes playing, and he seems to know exactly which percussion instrument will sound amazing in whatever he might be playing! :D

I've heard some sick drummers in my days of travel in jazz bands, but he is the best I have heard. This cat makes it look so easy."Do he know that he is that good on drums, or is it all to natural for him, an everyday thing?"

@samboadie It looked to me that Rodney (bassist) and the piano (Richard Johnson maybe?) came in a bit early when they assumed Herlin had finished his solo by giving a nod; that's why they stopped playing the vamp after about a little over a measure (notice the pianist looks up and smiles). Herlin then encourages them to continue the vamp; you can actually hear him say, "Go ahead" at 5:19. So the audience seems to be very aware of what's going on.

@samboadie That's interesting. I'd never picked up on that before.

@samboadie Are you kidding? Sometime I'll get around to postinmg the rest of the concert & you'll hear just how much the crowd loved it.
@kyokurider12 жыл бұрын
weird, actually i thought he was starting a second part of the solo where he will start integrating more parts of the kit and bring some volume and groove without loosing the musicality it shares. To be honest, i thought the piano player started before time was actually, and then Herliy approved in a way...; another opinion i guess..
