I liked CZJ better in this ep, though I have to admit she's still not quite the Morticia I expect. Still, I do like how they are differentiating the characters. Not all the Addams' are the same. This Gomez and Morticia are softer (for lack of a better word). Thing is loyal and empathetic almost to a Samwise level. Wednesday, perhaps given her resemblance to Goody and the family lineage, is very much an Addams to her core. And yet, as you note, she is very protective of her family, both natural and 'ohana. Like she said last episode, she wished she could care a little more.
