Snape was a truly tragic character. He lost the only woman he ever loved to the man who bullied him - James Potter. Later, he became a double agent in order to protect Lily. After her death, when her son Harry eventually came to Hogwarts, Snape protected him in many unseen ways because of the love he still had for Lily, in spite of Harry's resemblance to James. In the end he came to care deeply for Harry, and gave his life to protect him, in hopes that Harry would be the one to finally destroy Voldemort.

@@abhisheklama1393 Snape certainly loved Lily but it wasn't an obsessive love. However, even from the films we can understand that Snape was not always a good person but despite this he then chose to help the good people, it is true that initially he only did it for Lily but even after Lily's death he continued to help the good people, even when Voldemort returned in the end he always chose to remain loyal to Dumbledore and secretly helped and protected Harry. Also, in Goblet, when Harry shows him that Voldemort regenerated by using Harry's blood it says that Dumbledore, "had a strange look in his eye that almost seemed like triumph". He knew that Voldemort had tied Harry to life as long as Voldemort lived. But Harry had to truly believe he was going to sacrifice himself for, again, the greater good. Who never read the books can't understand that Dumbledor knew stuff all along but he also hoped there would be a way for Harry to survive. And in the 4th book when Voldemort used Harrys blood to come back to life made Harry and him even more connected. They shared the same blood. So when Albus heard that he smiled. In the books he smiled. He realizied that Voldemort made a mistake and gave Harry an extra life by mistake. But it was essential for Harry to never know this. Thus Albus only told Severus one fact and he never told him that Harry wont die. It was essential for Harry to want to die to sacrifice himself for others as Lilly did. Keep in mind Snape was a villain, but he was a deeply complicated one. He wasn't evil, he was angry at the man who bullied him and stole the girl he loved, and he was angry at the man who he gave allegiance to, Voldemort, for killing the woman he loved. If not for that love, Voldemort would have won early on. And yes, he came to care for Harry as being more than just an extension of Lily. As for Dumbledore, don't be mad at him. He was singularly focused on defeating the Dark Lord, but that did not mean that he did not care for Harry either.

I tried to put myself in snape's boots. I am 34, I loved once in my life, i still love her from 2008. I know nothing of her whereabouts now. Would I protect the child of the woman i love, to the point of sacrificing everityhing? I imagined how her child would be, seeing her child with my own eyes. Yes, I would, I would do it.

It's sad that Professor Snape couldn't get his happy ending with Lily, but he called her a mudblood during an argument and caused a rift between them. He carried that regret for so long, which led him to leaving the Death Eaters and subsequently became Professor Dumbledore's double agent. The regret only increased once Voldemort murdered her & James.

Its painful to watch this people reacting to snape patronus without knowing the context. For those who want to know snape and lily have the same doe patronus snape patronus took the form of a doe because of his deep feelings to lily and even she was long gone snape patronus still take form as a doe.

bruh just a friendly reminder people snape was also the same guy that was bullying a child just because the childs father bullied him when they were younger and just because the loved his mother people are like awww hes so innocent now haha. come on bro imagine if that was your kid just starting at middle school and a ADULT teacher is bullying him. he chose to be a death eater he was not some saint that got absolution just because he was obsessed with the main characters mom bro

I wish most of these reactors would get the idea that Snape only cares for Lily not Harry. Hell I don't really think He cares for Lily is just obsessed with the idea of loving Lily which has bittered his life towards everything potter. I still don't like Snape if he really loved Lily he should at least treated her son better. No matter what even if it was in private. Cause in the book it even says during this scene when Dumbledore asks if he cares for Harry Snape says"For him expecto patronum " (then he cast his patronus) showing it is only Lily he cares for. Snape is a selfish bitter man in my opinion but he at least he worked to bring Voldemort down to try an answer for some of his sins even if a part of it was for vengeance

Unpopular opinion, but im just gonna say, Fuck Snape. The fact that he treats Harry with such utter contempt throughout his entire time in school shows that he hated James more than he ever loved Lily. Even if he started with a bias at Harry for his outward appearance of James he would have known early that he had the morals and heart that a young Lily had. Plus, he only went to the good side after the girl he was crushing on was targeted. Thats like sympathizing with a Nazi because he fell in love with a Jewish girl that was targeted.

You make some good points. I was bullied mercilessly in middle school, but that didn't stop me from helping one of my bully's little brothers find his way out from the middle of the woods when he got lost on the trail near his neighbourhood. The poor kid was in tears when I found him all he wanted was to go home to his Mom. He even had me hold his hand the whole time just out of fear of being separated. He was a very sweet kid, a far cry from his older brother. I actually felt rlly sorry for him, because knowing how cruel his older brother was to me at school, I could only imagine what his little brother had to go through at home. So long story short; ye u right fuck Snape.

Why do people interpret this as Dumbledore not caring for Harry? And Snape caring for him? It’s definitely not the case. Dumbledore loved Harry. Snape was indifferent.
