I'm dealing with this now on my Larrivee LV03-e. I went down 1/2 a string guage so had to get some more relief into the neck. It never dawned on my after 11 years of playing this guitar that I had no idea where the truss rod adjustment nut was located. In looking into the sound hole, that didn't clear it up until I got a dental mirror at just the right angle was able to see where it was. After cursing Larrivee and all of his offspring for the sadistic position of the nut, I ordered the correct wrench and I'm trying 1/4 turns and waiting for results in 2 hour increments. Thanks for confirming my feelings on this otherwise stellar guitar. I'm sure they aren't the only ones that bury this in the sound hole where it's particularly hard to locate. In fairness, Martin and many others choose to put it on the butt of the neck, my best guess so as to not take the Gibson philosophy of "1/16th of an inch of wood at the headstock break is plenty of wood for anybody!", followed by the sickening sound of a headstock snapping off as the guitar slides slowly to the floor...

My Lowden requires the same kind of wacky shaped tool to adjust the truss rod. Rather than indulge the silly design by purchasing such a tool, I bent a 3/8" copper tube into a "J" shape, then taped an "L" hex wrench into the hole of the short end of the "J" and it works like a charm.

Some Larivees have a small gap just above the truss rod opening and if the wrench goes in that gap it feels like it's in the right spot. But it's not and turning it does nothing, obviously. That's why I always use a mirror.

I have two Larrivees. A L-03 that I purchased years ago and an LV-05. Both guitars are pretty amazing. But the 03 in my fave. It's back and sides are Indian Laurel that gives it a sound very close to a certain type of rosewood from South America. That wood was used to manufacture a limited series. And I feel damn lucky to have one. The LV is also a fine instrument with red mahogany back and sides. Not as much punch as the 03 but more rounded tone. I don't know why these guitars aren't more popular because they're pricing and quality is comparable to anything out there. Dave I wanted to ask you what type of guitar polish you use? I saw your spritzin something on the guitar but didn't catch the label.

David i got a Mitchell Dreadnought for a hundred bucks in mint condition someone must have lost a saddle when they took the strings off got a new saddle but didn't file it down and just stuck it on there, so naturally I had to take it off and sand it down well worth it for a hundred bucks by the way what do you think of Mitchell guitars their pretty good I think. the neck isn't pushing down the sound hole the bridge isn't pushing down the sound hole. it's nice and straight it's beautiful 12-string by the way and it came with a hard case. it's nice dark blue velvet inside a roadrunner quite the bargain I'll tell you, I'm psyched I'm waiting for a new saddle to come in the mail from tusqe just so I can spruce it up a little bit better some brand new tens on it rock and roll bro😎🎸🎶

I watched a video where somebody fretted each string at the 3rd fret and plucked string (between) nut and the fretted note. He said if note sounds out the string groove at nut was too high and needed filling down until string doesn’t sound. Is that a good reference or just BS?
@jonahguitarguy3 жыл бұрын
Got into an argument on another channel about how the hole through the transverse brace could weaken the brace. Poked the hornets nest with that one. So Larriavee gets around drilling that hole with the freaky wrench. Good for them. Could also just have the rod adjust from the nut end. Trust me that stirred them up as well.

Dave - in the first few seconds of the video, you show a close up of the headstock. There is a really sharp pull angle on both E strings into their tuners. I've generally wrapped these "the other way" and wound them from the outside to reduce that angle. Am I way off base? I am an amateur everything.

Dave, I’m looking to buy a Larrivee L 03 used. A guy in my hometown has one that is a L 03 WL (Claro Walnut back and sides), however, it has a long hairline fracture near the nut that spans about 3 frets. He claims it’s an easy fix and says it’s in good condition. He wants $1250 but the neck issue is a huge concern. Is this an easy fix?
