I won't say Jay's wrong for calling Bird calling his shots and making them disrespectful. I'm just saying that it was disrespectful in the very best way in a sports contest. The disrespect of, say, Laimbeer, was an entirely different critter. The difference is subtle on paper, but the difference is huge, and it can easily get muddled. JMNSHO

Thank You for that explanation! 💯
@Alice-xy3fi9 ай бұрын
Laimbeer wasn't disrespectful...he was homicidal-- or at least, out to hurt, get guys out of the game, or even end their careers. Not saying his intention was to end careers (though I wouldn't put it past the lowlife); I would guess he just wanted to nullify them for the game being played, but so far as I could tell, he sure didn't care if he ended players' careers, or ruined their lives. He was a whole other order, and he wasn't just at the high end of the normal rough old time games-- he went WAY beyond that, which is why he was hated, including by Bird, who tangled with, say, Dr. J and Kareem and the Pacers' Chuck Person and never let their on-court tangles lessen his respect, admiration or liking for them. Also, Jordan has said in interviews that he learned his trash talking from Bird!

@@JayHemmsSports You're welcome...and, I was so het up thinking about Laimbeer and what pos he is, that I forgot to say, "Great reaction!"-- and not just because you get and appreciate Bird's game, but also because of your enthusiasm and love of the game, and because you're fun to watch and listen to. So thanks for the interesting and enjoyable reaction.

@@Alice-xy3fi Yup, that's actually him in detail. He once belittled Jordan because all he did was become an NBA legend, but lame-beer had the skills, intelligence, and talent to be born into a rich family, which clearly made him a more important human being. Being remember as a premier NBA thug was just a bonus. Sound about right, Alice, or should I have poured on more derision??

Nope! Never be another Bird. You had to see Larry Bird play the whole game. Even when he didn’t have the ball. You’d watch and see him run somewhere on the court and wonder, “Why is he…?” And then BOOM - a steal! Or BOOM - a blocked shot from behind. The guy knew what the other team was going to do BEFORE the other team knew it. It was comical sometimes. Sure, he’d have a bad game once in awhile. But he’d have won FOUR rings if he hadn’t got in a bar fight during the ECF in 1985. He broke a finger in his shooting hand. It was visibly swollen later in the NBA Finals against the Lakers. And it caused him to miss one of the few clutch game winners ever in Boston. Maybe the only one. But Larry was pissed! So pissed that the next year he and his Celtics went 40-1 at the Garden; 50-1 including the Playoffs and another NBA Championship. No other team in history, not the Lakers, not the Bulls, not the Warriors have EVER gone 50-1 at home. The lone loss was early in the season (December) against Portland. Bird is the word!

They were so tired bird said ok foul shots, no body leaves until you each make 15 in a row. as he was walking off the court a ball rolled past him, he took off the suit jacket and put it on the clipboard picked up the ball and made 25 consecutives shots from behind the 3point line, put the ball down picked up his jacker and clipboard and walked out just looking back at the players.

We should never get that sense. Keep up the good work young man. I’ll keep watching. You keep providing great reactions. 21:06 (and hit READ MORE for a question at the end, if anyone can help) That small part is one of my favorite quotes on Larry, from one of my all time fav players (Knicks fan 😊). I mean, the whole thing Ewing is saying, you can see in his face like, how he's still "upset" (for lack of a better word), that his boys he grew up with were ever dismissing Bird. Lol, but specifically in regards to that timestamp, when Pat goes "..he's DEMOLISHING EVERYBODY" 😂😂😂 Ps-- right after that clip, there's that old timer telling the Indiana State story, "...Bird... Bird...Bird..." Who is that? I always thought Bill Russell, but i actually saw an extended clip of that, and they show Russell laughing in the seats, so now im like "ummm, who is that now?," And i always thought it was weird hearing Bill Russell saying "i love u Magic, but not as much as Bird," almost as if he SHOULDN'T be a Bird fan over Magic, insinuating that he's a Lakers great... Ill be 46 in May, started really getting into ball at around 86, 87? So that Russell era is obviously before my time, regardless of how much I've went back and tried to read and watch*.. soooo.... Any help...? (*: Ps--- ive watched/read A LOT about Wilt, cuz growing up, id hear my uncles and stuff talk about Wilt Chamberlain so much, i was trying to find out about him at an early age. But once the internet was a houshold thing, that's when i really ramped it up, i just LOVE basketball so much... So while despite not seeing it as it happened, i really laugh, and depending on whats said, will get mad at, people downplaying Wilt Chamberlain's greatness; ESPECIALLY the flat out INCORRECT narrative that he was a foot taller than everyone else. If Wilt hadn't loved the women more than all, and even worse for the league lol, had the NON-STOP competitive streak of a Jordan, Kobe, or hey, Bird? SHIIIIIIIT There would be ABSOLUTELY ZERO QUESTION who the GOAT was, you must believe me when i say this. Again, i have watched and read and looked up SO MANY things about Wilt, my God. Even the above average Wilt fan probably is unaware of some of the things that make me say that. Im not saying that I'm the preeminent Wilt historian, or that he was an aloof athlete. It was more of...damn...hard to really put into words... like he knew he could, well, "DEMOLISH" (😂) everyone else, so he scaled it back most of the time. If u want an example, and u actually aint one of them sad TLDR guys lol, and made it this far, go look up a real in depth story of his 100 point game, and ESPECIALLY AFTER the game, what happened and how he was. That's really a perfect example of what i mean when i say he scaled it back--- keeping in mind this man just scored 100 FRIGGIN points....)

I am obv misremembering (word?), but I associate 94 Arkansas wirh a much more stoic black coach. And his blank face wasn't "anybody home?," but rather you telling yourself, "okay don't mess up, don't say anything stupid, play your role, this man will kill me wirh 5 words or less" lol Regardless, THANK YOU... again, seen this clip numerous times, always thought Big Bad BRuss (Russell has that happy, loud, infectious cackle, Nolan here just seems like he is a happy, always laughing, fun to be around guy!)

Just checking stat lines - Larry is top fifty or just outside that in ppg, assists (52nd all time), steals, rebounds (55th all time), and free-throw percentage. Very few are in that list of having stats spread across many aspects of the game and being elite in them all. Take Jordan - he has ppg and steals. Wilt has points and rebounds (stats are a little light - would have blocks too I'm sure if they tracked them during his time). But even the best of the best rarely had more than a couple in that top fifty or even top hundred - Bird has five stats that are among the best ever - that's pretty crazy when you think about it. And then there are those that think he wasn't that great! I mean he has more rebounds per game than Patrick Ewing, Yao Ming and Antetokounmpo!!! 🤯
