I love the look in Larry Bird's eyes when someone names a current player and Bird says, "Wouldn't it be fun to play against him?" Still misses the chance to play against the best competition. Almost makes me regret hating him in the 80s.

By far the coldest thing Larry ever did was at the all star game three point contest he walked in with his jumpsuit on and looked at all the guys participating and said “which one of you motherfuckers is coming in second” then proceeded to win the contest without taking his jumpsuit jacket off

Also it was pretty cool when he started in the NBA his first day he told all the PROs "Let's get one thing straight, I will never carry your luggage and I will NEVER do your laundry!" and he never did.
@sgardner4313Ай бұрын
I liked what he said the year he was injured and couldn't participate in the 3-point contest. Hodges, a player for the Bulls, had come in second several years and came in first that year. A reporter asked him if he attributed his win to Larry being out, and Hodges responded, "Hey, Larry knows where he can find me." When asked about this exchange, Larry said, "Yeah, I can find him on the end of Chicago's bench"
@mikesg72Ай бұрын
@sgardner4313 Another one when he was a rookie, Pistol Pete (another legend) was telling Larry "You can't take those kinds of shots. You're a rookie and you're double guarded." Larry Bird: Only man in NBA history to shoot 50-40-90 four straight years while averaging over 28 PPG. And that's not counting the double digit career rebounding and being the best passing forward in history. Celts go from 29 wins before his rookie year to 61 wins his rookie year and there was no Parish, McKale, DJ, or Ainge on that team, just the same guys who won only 29 plus Larry Bird. Greatest one year win improvement by ANY team in NBA history and it came because of the addition of a rookie. It proved that Bird carrying a bunch of no-name players at Indiana State to a undefeated season, slaying one giant after another during March madness until that 1979 NCAA championship game was no fluke. What he did at sad sack Indiana State has never been repeated and what he did his rookie year at (then) sad sack Boston has never been repeated. There is a reason for that, a very precise reason...BECAUSE NO ONE SINCE HAS BEEN AS GOOD AS BIRD AND THEREFORE COULDN'T DO THOSE THINGS AND DIDN'T DO THOSE THINGS. You will never see another Larry Joe Bird.

There are two types of trash talk: "I'm gonna hit this shot right here", and "you suck". One says, I believe in myself, and the other says YOU are nothing. The first invites you to try and stop me,and the other tells you to quit. Those with self confidence do the former. Those with no self confidence do the later. A good example is Bird walking in to the All-star locker room ahead of the three point shootout and saying " who's playing for second?" That's balls. The later is Draymond telling an old Paul Pierce on the bench "you think they're gonna have a farewell tour for you like Kobe? You ain't Kobe They don't love you like that. Pierce felt like crawling into a hole and crying.
