I've been a Lakers fan since 1985. I freaking hated the Celtics and Larry in particular. But I missed him sorely after he retired. Even though we had MJ, the NBA wasn't the same after Magic and Bird retired.

Yes there was a question on who the captains of the dream team would be. jordan was the first pick. He wisely turned it down to Bird and Magic. SI wanted to do a cover shot of jordan and Magic. Magic said "I won't do it without Larry"Magic gave credit where it was due out of respect.

It's impossible. The Basketball gods shined down on the NBA in 1979. Teams were hemorrhaging money, the NBA was on its last leg, games were on tape delay, and attendance was south of 50%. Larry and Magic single handedly saved the NBA and globalized the game.

+elsrdick Bird was shy. That is obvious. He was not comfortable with this kind of thing. Bird would have preferred to retire and go out the backdoor. This was for the fans. Magic knew this and carried the whole thing. I respect him for that. He knows Bird wants no part of this.

I've been a Boston sports fan ever since I was a kid. I grew up in the city. It was a different time back then. Truth be told, the NBA was suffering. All of that changed when these 2 future Hall of Famers came into the league. I feel very fortunate and blessed to have been able to see both of these guys play at the old Boston Garden. There should be more people like this not only in the NBA, but all sports!

Dominique wasn't left off the Dream Team out of any disrespect. He suffered a ruptured Achilles earlier in the year and was still recovering from the injury. Regarding Laettner, it was just some higher-up's dumb idea to give a nod to the tradition of collegiate players. I actually felt bad for the guy. As great as he was as a college player, CL was a complete fish-out-of-water on that team. He had a respectable pro career but now has to live out the rest of his life as the butt of Dream Team jokes though no fault of his own.

Gotta say, I know Larry Bird's daughter. I saw all the pain he caused her by all of his neglect of her. I am definitely not a fan of Larry Bird. Even now, she holds hope to have a relationship with him. She is just a wonderful person. She has always been since we were kids. Go see your daughter slimeball! Kevin, Bird was drafted the year before as a "junior eligible" by Boston. Red Auerbach took a chance he could still get Bird , even if Bird played his final senior season with ISU. As it turned out ISU went 33-0 and to the NCAA final game surprising everyone. Back then there was no "draft day" and Bird was out playing golf and did not even know he had been drafted LOL.
