Everyone remembers Bird's quote before the first 3-point contest, when he asked who's coming in second? But his quote after Craig Hodges won, the first year Larry Bird didn't enter the contest, may be his best. After his win, Craig Hodges was asked by a reporter if his win was, perhaps, tainted because Larry Bird didn't compete. Craig Hodges reply concluded with a challenge, "Bird knows where to find me." When they told Gangster Larry what Hodges had said, Bird replied, "Yeah, I know where to find Craig Hodges...at the end of the Bulls bench."

One of Bird's competitors in all of these contests was Craig Hodges, who would go on to still hold the record to this day for most shots made in a round and most consecutive shots made ('91). Before then, he lost to Bird three times in a row until finally winning in the latter's last participation in 1990. Hodges would go on to have a three-peat of his own, but it really goes to show how clutch Bird was in this contest before his injuries. Notice in the last rack that he quickly chucks up the first two shots and slows down for the rest as if purposefully setting the stage for a dramatic finish.

About the same. Defense is more complex now. Don't forget they scored even more points in the 80s than they do now. So let's not act like crazy defense was being played.
@1124-w9d
@1124-w9d 4 жыл бұрын
Brian Edwards actually, the individual scoring in the 80s wasnt high as you might think. among 7 straight times mj won the scoring title, 5 times no one else averaged 30 points per game. in 86-87, no.2 scorer in the league was nique at 29. and players back then played heavier minutes. it was much tougher to score inside back then because the defense was cramped inside the 3 point line. so the majority of players scored off mid-range. bird didnt even attempt 1 three per game for many of his seasons, because teams back then didnt use the 3 in their strategies. if bird played now, he would shoot way more threes and probably could score more easily. but he would have trouble adjusting because the nba is so different these days. nba has been changing the rules since the 90s to encourage scoring, so its only natural that its easier to SCORE now. that doesnt mean its easier to PLAY now. its just a different league from back then.
@pathfinder375
@pathfinder375 4 жыл бұрын
@@1124-w9d funny how people say there's no defense now because the scoring is so high. But in the 80s it was higher and they barely shot any threes. Just shows that the defense back then was very poor. Birds shooting is undeniable regardless of era, but i think he would struggle with the speed of the game and his lack of athleticism would hamper him quite a bit. Don't think his scoring average would change much.
@1124-w9d
@1124-w9d 4 жыл бұрын
Angus Long uh...no it wasnt higher. youre thinking about overall scoring, but individual scoring wasnt higher at all. lets compare 2018-19 to 20 years earlier: in 1988-89, the league leader was jordan at 32.5, followed by karl malone at 29.1 and dale ellis at 27.5. in 2019, harden at 36.1, paul george 28 and antetokounmpo at 27.7. but harden, george and gianis all played under 37 minutes. and giannis even averaged 27.7 in just 32 minutes, making JUST 0.7 3S PER GAME. In 89, jordan played over 40 minutes, malone 39, and ellis 38.9 minutes. also in 89, 9 players averaged over 25 ppg, while 11 players did in 2019. back in 80s, there were barely any load management. bird played through injury for his last 3 seasons,while mchale played through the playoffs with his foot broken. the best players would play 40 minutes and 82 games. in short, 80s players averaged similar number of points playing more minutes, pointing to it being harder to score for individual players. did you know penalties for flagrant fouls prior to 90-91 was the opposing team just designating which player would shoot the free throws? no ejection, no fine, nothing. and second and third fouls after a foul wasnt penalized. the hand-checking ban of the 94 made it impossible to hand-check full-court, and another change in 04 made it nearly impossible to touch the perimeter player on D. NBA has been constantly changing the rules for entettainement, encouraing more offense, particularly for players playing outsidw the paint. notice that there are hardly any premier low-post scorers in the league anymore? the league has been shifting toward the perimeter and toward more scoring. and as i said, just because its easier to SCORE doesnt mean its easier to PLAY. im NOT saying players in the 80s are superior than players of today. the greats are great, no matter what era. bird will have less trouble scoring because of the rules implemented to protect the offensive player, but he may have more trouble adjusting to the speed and athleticism, particularly on defense. there are pros and cons in each era, which is why there is no point in arguing which era is superior. its just different, thats all. As i repeatedly said, just because i said it might be easier for bird to SCORE now, doesnt mean i think its easier for bird to PLAY now. its a differnt era, NOT a superior or inferior era.
