Way back when......1976ish saw LC with Jeff Porcaro, Mike Porcaro and Greg Mathison at Donte's in North Hollyweird with about 30 people present. It was a regular Friday night gig for these giants. They really kicked out the jams after a week doing sessions all week. The set always started with a ten minute version of Room 335. Jeff Porcaro always played an un-miked drum set. We sat where ever we wanted. It was a magic scene for about a month. Pretty soon we were waiting in line to see the same band at the Baked Potato. One night during the opening raucous tune, Jeff Porcaro [RIP] put his foot through the kick drum head, At the end of the song JP announced to the band that he had broken his kick drum head. The other members of the band said in unison that they didn't t notice the lack of this very talented right foot. I play drums professionally and I always carried a spare. I wondered how JP would save the gig. He told the band to play a ballad and he scurried into the Hollywood night to find a replacement. In record time JP was back with a new head and within 5 minutes they were back at full strength. If you ever visit lLA and you have never been there you owe your self the pleasure of an evening at the Baked Potato ......................

Yeah, back in the days at the Spud when Larry Carlton played jamming actual fusion lead guitar licks instead of the boring mainstream jazz he decided to sadly go to and bore me to tears with ever since. What happened to the old great fusion jamming lead guitar shredding Larry Carlton? When was the last time he ever played "Point It Up" or "Tight Squeeze" in concert? This show here isn't bad it's just sort of boring music compared to those old days your talking about.

I hear and see Mr. Carlton's playing has changed (expanded for the better) after his touring with Mr. Robben Ford. I'm saying I love that so much willingness to keep learning has been an ongoing thing for Carlton. Larry Carlton changed the guitar landscape-I know thousands of us thank him for that. This next part of my comment is just a personal note of my deep respect for Larry Carlton.... Go listen (really listen) to the playing Carlton did on the early Micael Franks records. His 'complete package' work on those songs is beyond compare! It's dialed back from the more up-front playing on the Crusaders stuff from the same period, and yet it is SO perfectly crafted to build those songs of Mr. Franks into musical movies that stand the test of time. The entire 'Sleeping Gypsy' record is one to start with if you need a suggested jumping off point.

There’s just something beautiful and elegant about the angle at which LC holds the guitar -it’s so consistent, so solidly seated, so natural and controlled, truly an extension of his body. Watching him play is like watching a world class athlete. I can think of a few other greats whose physical form is similarly natural and elegant: Clapton, Roy Buchanan, Tony Rice, McLaughlin. Contrast that with, say, the wild physicality of other greats like Page, Hendrix, or EVH.
