When people describe Larry as sometimes "sloppy" what they describe are those moments when he ventures out of his comfort zone, plays beyond what he knows he can play and challenges himself. Not many of his peers do this, and it is what makes him more interesting and more exciting than most of his peers to me.

...Larry is not afraid to make an intimation..a gesture..of what he is hearing in his head...even if the articulation between hands..does not quite match..perfectly,ala,mclaughlin,demeola..Larry just goes for the inspiration of flight in the jazz and stuff the speed perfection....but this is really some beautiful guitar🌈

technicians bore me, I love the organic textures of playing live where it is all real and flowing

It's my view that Coryell's mastery of many guitar idioms allowed him to play his instrument any way he chose at the moment he concieved of an idea and, being an improvisor with extensively knowledge of classical, folk, blues, jazz and experimental traditions, could excecute his ideas with speed, ferocity, delicacy, grace and volcanic bop acceleration that never lost their grit. While I give McLaughlin his massive due as a co-creator of the jazz-rock guitar revolution, it's Larry, I think, who's been more exploratory with his approach. McLaughlin is clearly more "flawless" in his solos through out his long career, and as brilliantly as he has adapted his recognizable method to a variety of material, I came to know what to expect everytime I put on a new JM release. Not so with Larry, who had a musical wanderlust , a willingness to change directions that kept me guessing what he would sound like with each new project. I haven't liked everything he's released in over fifty years of listening, but over all his improvisations continued to astound me for their unpredictability, their invention, his desire to constantly reinvent his playing with new ideas, contexts, musicians. Over time I expect Larry's reputation to grow. I can't think of a more important foundational guitarist for the way guitar is played in our modern era. There isn't a shredder who doesn't owed a massive debt to the sainted Larry Coryell. My two cents.

An excellent comment. I agree with every word. Worth much more than 2 cents!

I hope someone has the whole performance of the 11th House at the Old Grey Whistle Test...? Love to see that one in good picture quality... *sigh*

Restful Mind, 1975. Bought this album. was not what I was expecting after Level One & Planet End and prior Coryell offerings. But I love it. It was a place of a different emotion for sure. Sarabande, wow, such passion and grace. Just goes to show Mr. Versatility - Larry Coryell

I sat glued to this when it was broadcast [Nov '76?] - with a portable cassette recorder balanced precariously near the TV speaker. Looking back, I do regret making my parents sit through it, but there were no videos etc back then. I taped the whole programme. I thought he was great and listened back to it many times. I lost the cassette years ago and thought that was the end of that - till today! Full concert anyone? BBC? [I doubt it].

@notthebannerboys Man, you nailed it!... Larry definitely goes places where most don't.. He truly fuses together Rock, Country, Classical, Jazz, etc... What guitarist do any of you know that is as eclectic as Coryell... The guy can play almost anything... I think if he had focused on one genre, he would have been the best at it... I've been to more Coryell concerts that I can remember, where Larry dug down deep & just blew everybody away. ALL modern jazz guitarists have been influeneced by Larry

Superb! I still have my Restful Mind on vinyl I bought new in 1975. I finally saw Coryell live at a small jazz fest in Portland a few years ago; asked him to autograph the album cover. Also saw Ralph Towner with Oregon just before that and asked Towner about playing on the Restful Mind with Coryell. What a rare opportunity to talk to both of these masters. Obvious why Coryell is in the guitar history books. Thanks for posting this video.
