This fight was an incredible test of wills. Although Holmes won nearly every round, he was tested and hit with one of the best punches I've ever seen. The right hand that Shavers hit Holmes with in the 7th round was a punch for the ages, and even more incredible was that Holmes got up and went on to win the fight. Larry Holmes after this went on to defend his title 16 more times and prove himself as one of the great ones with an iron chin. Shavers was effectively done after this fight. He fought 20 more times with a record of 14-6 with 10 ko's but was never again a factor in the heavyweight division.

Ernie Shavers is greatest heavy weight to never a title . I always believed that had the Cruiserweight division came sooner then it did latter, Ernie Shavers would have been champion and dominated that division long before Holyfield did.

Holmes said Shavers hit even harder than Tyson, now that's saying a lot because everyone talks about Tyson's power. Problem with Shavers he wasn't a great finisher like Tyson was

@@jeremyschildcrout2393 so true to a point, I'm surprised he managed to stay on his feet against Holmes who nailed him a lot in two fights. Even the over the hill Ali had him in big trouble late in the fight and only the ropes kept Shavers from going down. I remember it took big Power puncher Ron Lyle a while to even floor Shavers, and Lyle was lucky to survive a knockdown by Shavers, Holmes and Ali were lucky also, because Shavers power didn't play. But yeah stamina was often more his problem than anything
